tail light ideas
I did a quick search and didn't see anything like this, so I'm starting a new thread... actually not sure if it should go here in Cosmetic Mods or in the Photoshops forum. Figured here would get more exposure to both BRZ and FRS owners/fans.
I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in thinking the taillight treatment on the BRZ/FRS is one of the weak points in the car's styling. Sorry but Altezza/Euro-style lamps were hot in the 90's and maybe in the early 00's, and now it's played out. Maybe they should have done something to differentiate FRS/Toyota from the BRZ in the rear as well. The taillights on the BRZ STi concept were amazing and I would have loved to get those on the BRZ. At this point I think I am going to almost certainly do the vinyl redouts ASAP when I get my BRZ. Anyways, I was playing around on Photoshop and trying to see what could be done with the standard tails and some red vinyl, to try and mitigate the damage so to speak. Some of these ideas maybe not so great in real world implementation, but they would be easy to try out with some redouts and willingness to experiment with cutting out parts of it. Perhaps one of the vinyl vendors like Premium Auto Styling would consider mocking these up with their vinyl and offering them as options if enough people like them? And maybe even this will inspire some of the companies looking at producing full replacement tail lamp housings to make something similar. Wish the shape wasn't so oblong and funky but we can work with what we got and maybe hope for a facelift (buttlift?) in a few years.full redouts: ![]() cutout #1 ![]() cutout #2 ![]() cutout #3 ![]() cutout #4 ![]() cutout #4A (sorry, vote for 4 as well if you like this one) ![]() cutout #5 ![]() and here's the standard unmodified tails for reference. ![]() smoked (sorry, vote for "something else" if you like this one) ![]() I'm just throwing out some ideas here, and if anyone else has other ideas please do share them here and give me input, I can try to mock up other ideas when I have the time. yeah i realized after i finished the poll that many will like smoked lights instead. I personally am not a fan of the smoked look but yeah, pick "something else" if you are in the smoked camp, or pick one of the others if you think you'd like that design, but in smoked. thanks!

I came up with one more, inspired by the tails on the AE86, MR2 Mk2, and others... fairly similar to 4, so let's call this one 4A and vote for 4 if you like it.

If I may submit some ideas:
I sorta want something that would go with existing body lines. I actually ended up not really liking them so much, but they're worth seeing I guess. Probably would look better in the flesh since the light assemblies aren't exactly flush with the body up top. ![]() ![]() Also while I have it open, if anybody wants a PSD with just the full red overlay and the stock under it: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7213641/brz-tail-lights.psd (right click -> save as)

that actually looks pretty dang good on the darker color car... but I wonder how it would look on brighter colors like WRB or Whiteout/SWP?
if everyone wants to post pics of their vinyled, smoked, or painted tails here by all means please add them... could be helpful to have a comprehensive set of tail light mods in one place if such a thread doesn't already exist. |
