Mounting tow strap?

How did you / would you mount a soft tow strap? The problem is that if you find a bolt with the weird threads for where the stock tow eye screws in, the direction of pull is at right angles to the plate on the strap, which seems Bad.

I am thinking of welding a 3” x .125 plate to the bottom of the crash bar that sticks out far enough to let me bolt the strap to it. It seems like there must be a better idea out there.

All suggestions appreciated!
