Asking advice about Bolt-On Turbo
First of all, sorry if my knowledge is limited
As thread above, I was planning to use Bolt-On Turbo kit but kinda worried about the engine's reliability especially if I plan to use it as daily or weekend car Here's condition of my car : - 2012 Toyota 86 - Manual Transmission - 13.000 km and ongoing (around 8.100 miles) - Full Stock, I mean like factory stock (no aftermarket exhaust, manifold etc) - Right Hand Drive - Pump Gas RON 98 (around AKI 91) - So far no problem for last 6 years except Occasionally Check Engine Light when I rev more than 6000 rpm (no matter gear 1, 2 or even 6) which I suspect either Fuel Caps or Oxygen sensor ? need to scan it later but usually CEL vanish in the next morning so I'm not too bothered by it Here're my questions : 1. I was aiming for 300 Hp (on crank, not 300 WHp), how reliable the stock engine and transmission are for that kind of power level on pump gas ? especially after more than 5 years of use 2. Is it better and worth it to upgrade to Facelift / Kouki 86 first ? Because I read in this forum that Kouki 86 Manual has some internal upgrade ? Does that mean it will be more boosted friendly compare to mine ? 3. Is it really possible to hit 300 Hp (on crank, not 300 WHp) with just bolt-on turbo kit on stock engine and pump gas ? Or Do I need to upgrade some parts to prevent both my engine and transmission grenaded by boost ? especially if I use this cars daily I was interested in greddy turbo kit, especially some positive result I read from this thread, but upcoming HKS turbo kit seems more interesting to me. In my beginner view of point, theoretically HKS kit should be better in paper (power, reliability, daily-use, etc) since it released 5 years later compare to other brands (which some say it's too late) due to more RnD ??? but greddy turbo kit should have much more proven real word datas regarding power it raised and long-term reliability by other 86 / BRZ users since greddy kit come earlier than HKS kit, plus it's really cheaper than HKS I apologize if I sound so noob regarding this, I just want to make sure going bolt-on turbo kit route worth the risk or not, especially when price of both 86 and kits are really expensive in here Thank you |

2. Doesn't matter 3. Yes, 98RON is typically closer to 93 (MON+RON)/2. I don't believe the HKS kit to be better, at least on stock engine/pump gas. |

I have the JDL kit on my BRZ, 290 whp, so more than 300 at the crank.
Its a daily driver, and sees track time every month, runs perfectly.

since January (~6k miles?), only had 2 problems with it, both caused by installer error.
The first was one of the silicon couplers popping off at the throttle body since it wasn't tightened down all the way. The second was my oil cooler lines being run incorrectly by a shop full of morons and melt on track and spray oil everywhere since it was touching the downpipe.

1) 300 crank hp is easily doable with just pump. With how hot I remember Indonesia being, I would highly suggest an oil cooler for engine reliability. Clutch is also something else you should consider, as the stock clutch has a limit of about 220lb-ft of torque, which you'll be close to with 300 crank.
2) Yes it would be better. Would it be worth it? Probably not unless you have the funds. It's a big premium to upgrade from the frs/brz to the new 86, and for the money you could easily get yourself a built engine. Many people have boosted the frs/brz and have had great success over countless miles.

If you have a check engine light intermittently for a long time, get it scanned. Don't do anything until the engine is 100%.
Go for the HKS, then please post a ton of pictures here afterward.

I have the ultimate racing kit with the gt3076r and it should be about 290whp. Haven't dynoed yet.
