Head Unit Not Recognizing iPhone

My iPhone will no longer connect to the stereo on my BRZ (2016 Limited). I have been using a USB cable to connect, and selecting "iPod" as the source to play music or listen to audiobooks. It's been working fine for the two years I've had the car, until this morning. I connected everything up as usual, but the stereo display just keeps saying "No Media Connected."

Has anyone else had this problem? Bluetooth phone connection works fine, but I can no longer play music or listed to audio books on Audible from my phone.

Have you cleaned the lint out of your phone's plug socket lately?

Have you updated your phone recently? Before I stopped updating my phones, I noticed updates would sometimes make some wires not work anymore. One update killed the whole charging port

Turn off your iPhone completely off then try again. If you got one of the recent iOS updates, those fuck with the Bluetooth connection. Or fixed some. It's a coin toss really.

I +1 this a billion.

Newer iPhones with the lightning plug are notorious for collecting literal chunks of lint and dust balls. You have to either use a wooden toothpick to gently clean/scrape it out, or go to an Apple Store and hope they have a better method.

Otherwise, are you able to connect your iPhone to a computer and still access its data? Like with itunes, etc.

Yes, I tried that. Still didn't work. I'll reboot the phone and check for upgrades...

On the Bluetooth portion have you checked to see that you are connecting for Media as well as phone, or has Apple chosen to limit that functionality? I use an iPad to listen to audio books all the time over Bluetooth, but don't have an iPhone. My android phone also works fine (admittedly with a different headunit).

This is what I would suspect. Seems like Apple likes to release iOS updates before they're entirely ready and cause problems with things in general.

Have you performed a hard reset on the iPhone?
Have you tried disabling Bluetooth on the car + phone and repairing?
Have you recently updated to iOS 11.2.6?

I rebooted the phone by closing all apps and powering off/on, and that fixed it (phone was already at iOS 11.2.6). The simplest answers are always the best

I guess it's not just Windows devices that need regular reboots.
