Cracked windshield

anyone ever have their windshield just crack for no reason? got home last night, parked in the garage(no lower than 50F) and woke up to a nice 5" crack coming from the bottom going up.

it has been super cold here recently and with the salt/brine on the road I stopped to rinse my car off because it was covered in that white stuff. could that have done it? I did go to the gym before going home so it sat outside for a couple of house but even that wasn't below freezing.

now I'm certain that nothing it me on the road and that nothing happened in the garage. just wtf?! am I simply not allowed to have nice things?

The first time my windshield cracked I didn't know it had a rock chip because it was down towards the very bottom til I came outside to a 8-10" long crack. No indication of any damage at either end of the crack?

I'm on my third windshield. It doesn't take much at all to crack one. You may have gotten a tiny chip without even realizing it. A lot of crap is getting kicked up right now in places where the roads have been salted or treated.

Skip Safelite and find a reputable local installer. You'll get better service and a MUCH better price on factory quality glass.

it would have to be a crack I didn't know about. seems to have started out of no where. but even still I was never in freezing temps yesterday or last night.

I swear between the paint and this the BRZ is the most delicate car I've ever owned.

I've called a couple of places. all $500+. Safelite=$365. fml

Huh. Safelite was at least $100 more expensive both times mine was replaced. Last time I think I only paid $360 in New Orleans for really pretty PPG glass, and I was able to roll into their shop and back out in under two hours instead of waiting two weeks for an appointment from Safelite.

Personally, I think I'd read some reviews on line and call a few more places. Your profile says Atlanta. Most large cities have at least one good glass shop that comes more highly recommended than the rest.

Mine cracked in SoCal where the low was 65 lol. Our windshields are fragile

Ouch, would think there would be more competition in a major city like that to lower the price. I had mine replaced for $240 a few years ago.

Yes. Mine is over half way across the windshield now. Kind if annoying as the car is only a year old.

I haven't had any issues with the paint, but I wouldn't be surprised if the windshield is thinner than most other cars for weight-saving purposes.

Windshield is as thin as reasonably possible to add lightness & drop CG.

This amplifies issues arising from normal variations in manufacturing. If I had to replace a windshield more than once for some unexplained reason, I would suspect a mismatch in the curvature of the frame.

Full disclosure: Not a windshield expert. I'm just applying related experience to a offer a free theory. The variations are real. I'm speculating on cause & effect.

Well, echo419 .......that's a shame......

Sometimes glass just cracks ....... the reason don't matter.

Bad timing, with paying off holiday bills and all.

Yep, just get er replaced .......at least you will have a nice new, non-pitted windshield, to start off the new year ......
