N1 too loud need isolation
Hello my friends!
I have an N1 catback system and i love the sound!! But the noise inside the car is extremely loud and I can’t stand out for more then 100km So I came up with an idea to soundproof the cabin. I have a few questions to you hope you can help me Have any one of you guys done it ? Is it worth to even try ? What materials are the best ? And where should I start to damp the sound ? Thanks, Filip |

You're going to end up adding a TON of weight to the car and spending a LOT of money doing this. Better off just getting a new exhaust with less drone

There was a write-up thread on adding sound deadening material, very costly and labor intensive but check it out if that's the route you want to go.
Another quieter exhaust is much more feasible.

There is a DIY on how to add sound deadening material. It is a very time consuming extensive project. I also agree with what Slammillionaire said.

You could probably get away with just insulating the trunk.

Are you able to describe the tones that you enjoy the most from it so that the crowd could help you explore other options for exhausts that would give you the notes you like while getting rid of the horrid drone that exhaust has (I owned it so I know your pain)

If you insulate the interior from an obnoxiously loud exhaust, you may spare your hearing, but you'll end up, as most commentators have noted, with a heavier and by extension, slower, car. In addition you'll be forcing everybody else around to listen to the same racket you just insulated yourself from. They will be pissed off, not just at you, but at all sports cars with aftermarket exhausts. Find an exhaust you are comfortable with inside the car without the insulation and you'll make several groups happier. Win-Win-Win.

Yes I have. Took about a week, gutted the entire interior except for the dash, added about 100+ pounds of various sound deadening materials to the car.
That depends. Going to cost you at least a couple days...I took my time. Materials will run at least $500.00(USD) You will end up with a heavier car and a "quieter" interior...not sound proof by any stretch of the imagination. See www.sounddeadenershowdown.com Not saying to buy them there, just use it to do some research, he has very good information on his site. Get rid of the N1. The problem is the exhaust. The sound deadening will reduce the volume somewhat but the exhaust will still be loud and drone. Fun fact. First mod I did was the TRD catback, most people will say this is one of the "quieter" catbacks out there...loved the exhaust note but to me, it had a bit of drone at highway cruising speeds. That's when I decided to sound deaden my car. Went thru that whole process...didn't solve the drone problem so I ended up selling it and going back to stock. Interior noise levels were great after that, I could carry on a conversation on blue tooth with no issues at all. The sound deadening mainly helped reduce a lot of the road/tire noise. I've since made lots of changes to my exhaust set up and every one had a marked impact on interior noise levels, even with all the sound deadening. Bottom line, exhaust volume and tone/drone is mainly controlled by the muffler and the Cats...if you mess with those, she's going to roar. |

I had an Injen exhaust, freaking loud too. Looked into sound deadening, getting another resonator welded in, etc. But everywhere I looked, I got the same info. Anything you do to try and lessen the annoying drone will hardly have a satisfying effect.
Ended up changing my exhaust. |

New exhaust. I've sound deadened the whole car -- it doesn't make that big of an impact in terms of quieting down an exhaust.
Trust me.. I've been there. You need a new exhaust -- nothing will quiet that beast down except a larger exhaust. |

Sounds like you need a turbo.
For real though, if you have aftermarket headers, that's probably why it's unbearable. Cat-back section generally isn't too bad by itself from my experience but everyone's ears are different. I can at least 95% guarantee that even after deadening your trunk, it's still going to be obnoxious, if not immediately while your ears readjust, but eventually.
