Virtual Reality!
Does anybody in here have a HTC Vive and also can recommend to get it or not? I have a $599 burning a hole in my pocket and I think I want to get that thing.
I played on my cousins PSVR and from what I understand the Vive is heaps better. Any info on if this is a good purchase would be greatly appreciated. |

I have not tried the Vive but I use an Oculus Rift for my driving rig and it's awesome. (Cheaper too)

Any smart electronic people in here that can verify if these are what I need to extend the cables properly?

I have read that extending the HDMI cable is problematic for the Rift. - not sure if it's the same for the Vive. (I extended my USB cables with no problems though)

Skip the oculus or the vive and go straight for this:
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=6156600 Wider FOV, higher resolution, better weight and feel. Also doesn't require external sensors because of the built in cameras. |

Really since HDMI is digital pretty much any cable that is within specs should give you a decent signal. The question is whether or not there is a limit on the length of cable a Vive can support. I really want to get either the Vive or Oculus for flight sim and a few other purposes. Hard to justify the cost though when most of the games (outside flight sim) I'm interested in are multi-player and I can't see throwing out a few thousand dollars for family gaming. The family did a virtual escape room (6 people with Oculus headsets trapped on a spaceship) and it was a blast! The lack of (or I should say limited) peripheral vision did throw me off a bit at first but I adopted pretty quickly. It used hand tracking (I think it was LEAP but not sure) which was the best feature. With nothing in your hands, your "VR hands" just appeared in your vision and moved when you did, including finger motion. We wasted probably 3 or 4 minutes just waving and making hand gestures at each other.

For real tho, don't waste the money on the vive or oculus when there's better tech out for the same money

Have you used them both side by side? If so how does the tracking compare? I've used the Vive which was amazing and the HDK2 which I don't really like (the lenses press against my eyes and have to be readjusted constantly, the screen fogs up for the first 20-30 minutes, and the tracking is pretty bad if you want 6dof). I have looking at the Samsung Odyssey but I haven't actually used it.

I tried the Vive once at a demo event, and the few minutes I've played it (played Ninja Trainer and Space Pirate Trainer) were FUN. However, you would really have to get into it in order to really enjoy it. Some people trying out the unit were just standing idly pointing and shooting at stuff, which I don't feel what those games are about.
I had no interest in it back then as it cost $799 originally, but now at $599, despite still being expensive, I might pick one up along with a new GTX 1060. The library of VR games has since greatly expanded and I'm honestly looking for a new experience in gaming. Any recommendations for VR games? Looking for games like Space Pirate Trainer where you can freely move around and are not simply limited to the point-and-click locomotion that most games have. I understand this limits a lot of games with large areas (I'll play those too at some point), but being able to move however I wanted to dodge lasers in SPT was the biggest reason I enjoyed the Vive a lot. |

Yeah, as far as buying anything other than the Vive, that won't happen now. I made my choice. The technology for this is at flip phone level and in a few years we'll be at smartphone
and there are going to be so many levels in between that are a little better in small steps, so I'm sticking with the Vive. Everything online tells me that this was the one to buy at this point. It's kind of weird that it took this long for these systems to come out. About 30 years ago I was in the mall and they had a booth set up with a virtual reality game and I thought that it would take off from that point but it took all this time to come out. We just downloaded a pile of the free games and still are messing with those. For free games we are still having a blast, especially the laser tag and paintball games which you have to move around a lot with. We did just get the Rick and Morty game though which we paid for. I ended up getting these cables instead: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ...since they were verified to work and I really only need 25 feet instead of 30. If anybody thinks that they might enjoy this but don't want to spend the money at this time, it's probably best not to try out a VR system as you will be hooked and ready to throw your wallet at it. |

I develop content for work. I use both Vive and Oculus, and have tried the HP mixed reality. Oculus > Vive imo. Using 3 sensors the tracking is as good, and the touch controllers are far better. The headset itself is basically identical to the Vive in regard to image quality. Oculus is a bit lighter though. I really don’t know why anyone would pay extra for a Vive tbh.
