So its been a year since I've had this problem with my dome light. I replaced it with an LED bulb, and I have this issue where when the switch is set to "DOOR", the LED will be faintly lit when the doors are closed. When I open a door, the LED will fade darker, and then become a bit brighter again when I close the door. The LED stays faintly lit no matter how long I leave the car to sit, so now I just keep the dome switch to "OFF".

I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, there's a blown MOSFET in the BIU under the driver's side and the component that needs to be replaced is an "a1764" MOSFET. I found this info from an older post:

My question is, if I open up the BIU to perform any sort of work, am I voiding any significant warranty? I have the standard 3 year warranty that Toyota Canada offers on a new vehicle and I'm not too sure if replacing the BIU would be covered by that warranty.

First off, warranties aren't usually "voided". The manufacturer just may not do the work.

Have you considered just putting the regular bulb back in ......??

Well, not yet ....... but it might be if the MOSFET catches on fire and the BIU blows up ....... catching the car in fire ......

The answer is simple: unless you are a certified mechanic and/or there is a specific recommended procedure to repair the BIU from the manufacturer, you doing your own repairs simply mean you are responsible for the cost of replacement should you fail at your attempt.

This easily falls under the "improper repairs" part of the warranty coverage.

You would feel the same way about trying to educate w/ proper info, after 20 years of car enthusiasts asking the same questions over and over again.

It really doesn't hurt to read the warranty booklet and/or having a conversation with the dealer, but everyone seems to think "I bought this car and I can do whatever I want with it", and then are worried they can't pay for damages if it wasn't covered by the manufacturer.

Most will tell you that cars are probably the second-most important asset one would purchase, yet "car guys" tend to not treat their purchases with the diligence and care it deserves.
