280f oil temp? is that bad?

how long is too long to run hard at 270-280f oil temp? ambient temp was 110f

i ordered an oil cooler but i'm just wondering how degraded my oil would be after 6x 20min sessions alternating between hard and easy (260f when going easy)... completely stock engine

100-169F Warm Up Phase, high oil pressures
170-189F Near Operating temps, oil pressures still higher
190-225F Normal Operating Range, oil pressures normalize
225-245F Middle End of operating range for track use, 5% drop in oil pressures
245-255F Upper End of operating ranges for track use, 10% further drop in pressures on 0w20
255-265F Red Zone of operating ranges for track zone, 0w20 starts to thin, oil pressures drop to questionable range.
265F+ Playing with fire on 0w20

Can't remember where I found this or else I would credit them.

Edit: Also it depends on what brand of oil you're running before it starts to break down.

Pennzoil Ultra, API SM 0-20W *Onset Thermal Breakdown @ 280f degrees f*
Mobil 1, API SN 0-20W *Onset Thermal Breakdown @ 265 degrees f*
Castrol Edge w/ Titanium API SM 0-20W *Onset Thermal Breakdown @ 280 degrees f*

Playing with fire there. Which oil cooler did you order?

Are these considered the Flash or Fire point? Sorry just trying to compare to the oil I have.

That's when the oil starts chemically degrading and is no longer lubricating as intended.

If I recall correctly these were the temperatures at which they started to vaporize/smoke.

I'd just skip doing track days at 110* if its that severe on your engine.

What would be the long term effects/damage to the engine from high oil temps like the OP experienced?

When I first got my '13 I took it out for 5 or more super aggressive canyon carving sessions that lasted an hour+ each, on the factory fill, where ambient temperatures were 95-105f. I did not have a way to monitor oil temperature at the time, but I'm sure it was easily in the 240-270 range if not higher.

And how would I know if I had that happen? What would I be looking for as far as symptoms?

Engine knocking, like you're afraid to run the engine because of how bad it sounds and significant metal in the oil/filter.

It's been years, your engine is probably fine. I've done 5x track days without an oil cooler and nothing showed up in my oil analysis that would indicate improper wear.

I'd do an oil change before putting any unnecessary miles on your car.
