Another Stock HU/bluetooth phone question

Well, my beloved LG vx8300 phone finally died after .. what... 15 years !??! I considered making the leap into this decade and getting a smart phone, but I didn't... because I just don't want one. So, I bought a new Kyocera DuraXV clamshell phone. So far so good.

Managed to pair it and transfer my contacts to the stock basic Pioneer unit in my '13 FR-S, and can make and receive calls. However, I still can't get the voicedialing/recognition to work. Here's what happens..

Long press the "call" button, get "Voice Recognition" (or something like that) on the radio display and the phone goes into voice command mode. Good.

I say "Call Roseanna Arquette" ... sometimes the phone actually gets that much, but it needs to respond by saying, "Did you say 'Roseanna Arquette?" to which I have to answer "Yes" before it will dial. If the phone is paired to the car, it's completely silent and it doesn't send it's reply messages to the car's audio system so I can hear and respond. I can see that the phone is going through that step by the display on the phone, but that's useless when driving.

My LG had the same issue (meaning it's programmed responses weren't audible through the car system, although, unlike the kyocera, I could hear the responses through the phone's speakers), but it was a much older phone with an earlier bluetooth protocol. I had hoped that the Kyocera would solve it, but it's even worse.

Any ideas? Anyone use the voice recognition/dialing function of the head unit? I had asked this question when I first got the car a year and a half ago, but the only responses I got were "the headunit sucks, dude."

Anyone? Mr. Bueller?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Barry
