Water rushed thru perrin exhaust parked...
I'll document my experience so other fellow frs/86/brz with aftermarket exhuast be alert. I parked my 13' frs facing down on a not so steep area. My car haves uel tomei header, front pipe also tomei and a 2.5 resonated perrin catback. And my car is my patner, i do take care of it, I usually dont park in any area that i know are prone to accidents, like tight parking spot, ect.
So when i noticed The heavy rainfall occurring and 3 feet of water rushing down hill into the back of my car i friking lost it. After almost letting a lot of water into the car getting in, it didnt start... it did crank. So i waited 2 hours. Upon letting the car go down this hill and did tried my best to get it as high as i could on the sidewalk. There i noticed water coming out of the exhaust, car didnt start. So i proceeded on removing the exhaust, when i removed the front pipe from the mid pipe a lot of water started to come out....and i mean a lot!!!! Car then started to show sign of life after cranking it a couple of time in 15 second intervals. Until it started. I am the happiest man alive. Car runs great, no signs of any failure for now. So if you have an aftermarket exhaust, be aware that a lot of water can get there. A lot!! Take care and thanks for everyone active on the forum. Sorry for the long write up guys. |

I was basically stuck in a parking garage watching the streets below. One old Grand Am shorted out his electronics driving through a flooded road. They tried boosting it (while still in water) but later it did eventually work again. The second car wasn't so lucky. A 2008ish Chevy Malibu went through the flooded road, and about 15 feet from clear road it died, but the lights stayed on. We heard him cranking it later and it sounded like a jackhammer. Definitely threw a rod, which would write-off that car. |

I remember typhoon season on Guam and flash floods in New Mexico.
Tcoat's right. Be glad it didn't submarine while it was running. It'll happen with any exhaust. Think of the old potato trick. Doesn't take much.

In my first car, a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse, (which I still have) I hydro locked it.. I have a AEM CAI on it and its about 1 foot from the ground.. See my problem?? Went through some water.. Saw the RPM's drop, and I instantly shut it off. Let the water subside a little and Tried to crank it... Nada.. Locked up.. Towed it home, pulled the plugs and cranked it. It was like geysers out of the cylinders.. Drained the oil three times (full of water) and still drives fine years later!!

Reminds me of a time back-in-the day, I flew down to Mexico on a business trip (Mazatlán, I believe it was). They just had a really big rain storm. I was taking a cab to my hotel when the driver headed into this rain swollen "river".
I exclaimed that he wasn't going to try to drive across that ..... was he.. ?? He said for me to put my feet up on the dash and sit on my briefcase ...... I would be OK. I said, as I watched the sewage swirl around the car, I was more concerned about the car stopping. He said, no problem ...... my car has a very high distributer. Now just put a Mexican cab driver together in a town that had open sewers, in 2 feet + of water ....... We made it ...!! THE END |
