Tire for Tropical Weather
Hi Guys,
I had another thread on rim/tire combos and that made me curious about my tire choices esp since I know a lot of people in this forum are dealing with 4-season weather, while I live in a tropical country. Temperature here is ave. 30-32 C, never snows, rainy season with flash heavy rains. The only "grip" issue I have which may sound funny is that our driveway is VERY Steep and slippery. This means that light rain makes all the cars slip (unless 4wd) or if you approach with momentum. Given the stock height of the car, I cannot afford the momentum and have to tackle this rather slowly. Which is a good tropical performance/dd tire that can provide better wet/slippery grip than stock? 1. PILOT SPORT A/S 3+ 215/45 R17 2. DIREZZA DZ102 215/45 R17 3. VENTUS V12 EVO2 215/45 R17 4. Retain Stock Primacy HP 215/45R17 5. PSS? |

I'd get PSS, or even PS4. Later one gives up very slightly dry grip, but wet grip aswell should be better over PSS.

Stick to a dedicated summer tire, not an all season. All seasons won't grip as well and wear faster in the heat. Max performance is a nice compromise between grip and wear IMO (Extreme performance>Max performance>Ultra high performance>High performance)
Conti DW's are just about my favorite (they have the brand new continental extremecontact sport out now too), right now I'm on Hankook V12 Evo2s Can't go wrong with any of these really: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...earDiameter=17 |

Second vote here for Conti DW - they were great in the wet, have 98% of the dry grip of a PSS, are lightweight, and relatively inexpensive. That said, I haven't tried their replacement, then new ExtremeContact Sport, but it seems to be performing about as expected, given what I've read.

Michelin PSS, Continental ExtremeContact Sport, Bridgestone S-04.
I'm an S-04 fan, they do better in standing water than the PSS, at the cost of a bit of dry grip.

I'd add the Yokohama V105 sport to the list. Very similar tread pattern to the Toyo T1 Sport recommended earlier and has good grip in the wet.

Continental DW are great for summer driving and in rain. May as well upgrade to a 225 tire while your at it though.

Might not be the best logic but here is what I went with for similar weather conditions in New Orleans.
BFG comp-2 all season - reason being that if rain traction depends on adequate tread depth along with tread design, the longer I can maintain that deep tread the longer I will have a solid wet traction. For dry drip, I have enjoyed thus far the lower grip levels of the all season tire compared to what I assume a full summer performance tire would give me. Although, I have limited experience in this for the 86 chassis. The comp-2 is 400 rated so it's not like a 500 or anything, and should still maintain some fair dry grip. Another consideration was with as many potholes, sharp bumps and edges in these streets here.. a softer tire may not be as durable. I'd be pretty upset getting chunks taken out of my tire from daily driving. |
