Oil leak, cam plate replaced.

Hey all, first post here. Got a 2013 frs 10 series with 6sp manual, about 3 weeks ago and love the car, fits like a glove and handles so well. Has just over 15k miles. Had a Honda Crosstour with v6 before this so you can imagine how much more fun this vehicle is to drive.

I have smelled a bit of burning oil smell after getting off the freeway and idling. Not all the time but often enough to worry me. I saw how common it is for the stock cam plate to leak, so I changed it for the RaceSeng part and sealed with RTV and it seems good.

I still get a smell, and am worried if I take to the dealer (I'm still under power train warranty) they'll deny anything since I replaced the cam plate... I would think replacing it with stock before taking it would be wise, any thoughts? I don't see any oil when I wipe the bottom of the RaceSeng part. I am guessing it's a valve cover instead.

Another thought, could be old oil from when I resealed it that is still caked onto the exhaust and burning.

Anywho, assuming I do replace the stock part, how do I seal it again? The RaceSeng part was just 2 dabs of RTV... The stock part is different, do I slather RTV in the groove and just install and wait 24 hours?

It must be a slow leak since the oil level has been fine for the 1500 miles I've put onto it so far.

Even putting the old one back on isn't going to fool them since it will be obvious it was off. I would just take it in as is and say you changed it but still have the smell. They are less likely to try to blame it if you are up front with them right from the start.

If you want to take a closer look yourself here is the Oil Leak TSB (it is Subaru there is no Toyota/Scion one for oil leaks)

thanks for the reply and my apologies for my late reply.

you make a good point, but dealers have had to reseal customers' plates multiple times before fixing them, so i can't see them blaming me for the stock plate is it necessary to wait until the engine is ice cold before sealing cam plate? thats the only thing i might think of where i went wrong.

the other routes of oil leakage are also likely to drip oil onto a hot exhaust pipe? i'm having a hard time imagining it since its my first boxer engine and my HOA will probably fine me if i get underneath it with jack stands. sigh

Well, Decep, I'd suggest you take it into a dealer and see if they will sort it out and fix the leak under warranty.

Another option would be to take it into a shop that will be able to put it up on a rack, and see if they can identify where the leak is coming from ..... and fix it following the TSB.

I don't figure the engine would have to be "cold" to reseal the cam plate. It would most important to use a new "O" ring (if it has one); clean both surfaces well, follow the instructions on the tube of sealant and uniformly tighten the bolts.

I hope you get er fixed.
