Turbo back exhaust, what parts are needed?

I'm a little confused on the different pieces that connect from the turbo back to the rear of the car. Why do some downpipes replace the overpipe? (Like Nameless). Do I need an overpipe/front pipe/downpipe/mid pipe/headers/axleback if I'm going to turbo my car? Does the turbo kit replace some parts, like do I actually need headers with a turbo? Are they as important as opposed to a supercharger?

I want the full exhaust first, and would want preferably everything to be 3". I actually just bought a downpipe that's 2.5" without thinking and I'm thinking of just returning it. 3" piping seems hard to find, though.

It depends on what kit you go with...
Some kits can use any header, some kits can only use a specific header.

Which turbo kit do you plan on going with?

You could always get a 3" custom mendrel-bent piping after your turbo install.

I was planning on the SBD400x SpeedByDesign kit since people say it's plug and play, and the price point isn't too bad.

How long could I go with a turbo with stock piping? Idk if that would cause issues with the turbo or not, and I think the SBD kit says it's okay with the stock exhaust...

SBD comes with a header and downpipe

Is that all I would need? Is there no other piping involved from the turbo?

A true downpipe is the piece that will connect the exhaust housing of the turbine to the rest of your exhaust. I've seen some companies refer to the front pipe as a downpipe before. Almost all turbo kits have a flange on the manifold where the wastegate is placed, but a few like PTuning and Works allow you to use a header that would work in N/A fashion.

A stock/NA setup FRS/BRZ will be; header, overpipe, frontpipe, midpipe, axleback. There is one catalytic converter in the header and another in the frontpipe. That is the order of the exhaust names from engine to rear bumper. Some manufactures will integrate the overpipe and frontpipe. This has shown to increase power as it makes all that one pipe with minimal bends, but whatever.

As for your turbo question, basically they will replace the header section with another that bolts to the turbo. Then they will include a downpipe section, one end bolted to the exhaust side of the turbo and the other end will bolt to either the overpipe or, if it replaces the overpipe, to the frontpipe. From the point back, whether its the overpipe/frontpipe, its all up to you.

You will also need a tune with any turbo kit. You will blow up the engine if you do not have a proper tune. There is not turbo kit out there that just bolt up and drive. You are forcing a crap ton more air into the motor so you will need more fuel to compensate. You will also need to figure this part out. Some turbo kit come with a base tune to get you started so you can drive it but at that point you will need to take it to a tuner to get everything dialed in. If driving some place is not an option, its not for alot for alot of people, you can do a remote tune. There is a few tuners that are on here and you can PM or call them eventually to get that side taken car of.

There is a ton of pictures that will show a turbo kit bolted up inside an engine and also just to an engine that is outside the car. My suggestion is to look at those and see what every part and section of that is and how it works and what it does. There is a section on here devoted to forced induction and in there is threads and reviews on most kits out there, read them understand them.

Thank you that was super informative, exactly what I was looking for. I'll check up on those pictures and if I can find any. Appreciate it!
