Catch Can Questions

Hey all,

I need a catch can for my FBM turbo setup. I initially ordered an Allstar Performance universal tank, but I accidentally ordered the wrong configuration and had to return it. Now I'm wondering if I should still stick with that option.

  • I've read at least one member who said a vented catch can solution caused his AC to smell like fumes. Are other options less likely to cause this?
  • Does anyone have any other affordable recommendations?
  • I'm planning to route both the PCV valve and crank case hoses to the catch can. It sounds like the recommended hose size for the PCV is 11/32. Will a 3/8 barb work for this?
  • What is the size of the crank case breather tube? I'd like to see if I can find an adapter to use the existing tube, but I'll remove it and connect a new hose to the crank case if I need to.

Thanks a bunch for any help. This is one of the last pieces before I'm done with the turbo, and I didn't expect it to cause me this much confusion.

Radium or Velox. Get something made for this car and don't worry about trying to hack something into place.

That said, examine your PCV and crank case lines. Is there oil? If not, a catch can won't do much for you.

I may go with a proprietary option, but I'm already way over budget, so I'm thinking hard about my choices. Most 86 catch cans aren't designed for crankcase applications anyway, so I still have some of the same issues either way.

One of the main issues is connecting to the crankcase hose. I need a fitting like what Radium provides with their catch can. Does anyone know how I would find this?

Alright, I opted for this universal one since it's affordable and small, and I'm getting very little blow by. It sounds like I need a vented one if I'm going t go to both PCV and crank case.

https://www.amazon.com/Ruien-Univers...dp/B06XKCSHSL/

It comes with both 6mm and 10mm fittings. If anyone could recommend hoses and fittings, I'd appreciate it. I'm still really stuck on what I'll need to connect to the crank case side.

Yes FBM kits needed to have vented cans. Make sure you get a 1/2 plug while your at it for the intake plenum.

for vented you can replace the breather filter with a tube that routs down and dumps next to the transmission under the car, this will keep the fumes out of the bay but still allow a VTA setup. ive heard of people running a barb into the exhaust at angle to create a vacuum at WOT, this will also help burn off the fumes. the amount of vacuum will depend on your exhaust flow rate, ive heard anywhere around 6-8 in of Mercury

I like that idea since the fumes are annoying, but that would require some custom fab, right?

Ive heard of people drilling and tapping a portion of the header or exhaust at a 45* angle with a simple barb and that working for them. im going to try and machine something at work that will bolt into the existing exhaust system. the only thing im going to do extra is put a check valve into the line traveling to the exhaust in the event of a high pressure event like a backfire or exhaust blockage.

It's been a couple weeks now since I got this figured out. If my memory serves right, I used a 1/2 to 3/8 split barb to go from the crank case tube to my catch can tubing. Well, to be more accurate, I made a split barb by connecting a male-threaded 1/2 barb and a female 3/8 barb from Home Depot. Looks a bit ghetto, but seems to work well.

3/8 tubing worked fine for the PCV side. I used hose clamps to be sure though.

Fair warning to anyone considering vented catch can setups. You're going to be dealing with strong fumes. I mounted mine on the right strut bar. My AC ok if I keep it on recirculate, but if I'm in stop-go traffic or at a stop sign with my windows open, the smell is very strong.

Good to know, I was debating this. I'm stage 2 NA but looking to go JRSC within the next few years. I was thinking a universal catch can for the PCV would be good enough, but is the crank case vent needed too?

I'm not sure about the JRSC, but most kits don't require vented catch can setups. Most of the cans designed for the 86 aren't vented. FBM is one of the few I've seen that require it.

You don't want to do it if you have any restriction in the exhaust path (cats, muffler). It is done primarily on race cars with straight exhaust pipes.
