86 TRD Performance add-ons vs. BRZ Sport-Tech package

Apologies if this is posted elsewhere, but is there any merit to go with an 86 with the TRD Performance add-ons?

There's 6 it looks like:

Exhaust
18" wheels
rear sway bars
brake pads front
brake pads rear
lowering springs

The exhaust seems more cosmetic than performance-oriented, but the upgraded brake pads and sway bars could be an improvement, with the lowering springs probably more of a cosmetic/preference thing vs. an improvement on handling, at least on this car.

Tacking on those 6 TRD Performance upgrades brings the 86 up to ~$40K CAD whereas the BRZ Performance with the 10" subwoofer is only ~$36K CAD.

And the BRZ has really no factory upgrades that could be considered "performance" at all.

Thoughts?

Well, the Performance Package includes Brembos, better dampers, and alloy wheels, for quite a bit less than a TRD package. It's gotten quite good reviews from when journalists tried it in Japan and Spain as well in terms of ride comfort, precision, brake feel, and stability. The only thing in the TRD kit that interested me at all above what the PP offered was the exhaust, but personally I'd rather pick and fit that myself sometime and get exactly what I want. That plus I like the BRZ head unit and interior made the BRZ with PP a no brainier over the 86.

was there a head unit change for 2017? I was under the impression that it was the same one from 2013.

OP seems to be located in Canada so I don't think they can get the performance package unless they buy an Inazuma edition.

Ah, is that what the Inazuma Edition offers? Looked like just yellow paint, stitching and wider wheels.

God I hate that yellow; I honestly don't know if I'd go for those upgrades because of that, as shallow as that seems.

Seeing that the cost is a concern, you are better off just getting the yellow BRZ Performance Package.

Cool, thanks for that. I'm going to skip the Brembos (have them on my ST, pointless for street) and the stock dampers are probably fine as well.

Remember, everything in those packages are things you can get yourself, most of the time for a lot cheaper. If you like the 86 more than the BRZ then I say go for it, but don't get all 6 upgrades because that's a bit overkill for a street car.

Actually I think the old car performed admirably out of the box for street use with just a minor tire upgrade.

Not sure if they got rid the tendency of bottoming out at the rear over big bumps with the new car. That was the only reason I upgraded the shocks with their STI x Bilstein set, which on its own already cost as much as this Performance Package (the yellow edition is a bargain imo if you can live with the color, and especially after checking out the Miata pricing), but the standard model is fine too.

I like the BRZ better actually, so this is good. And yeah, from everything I've read, the first upgrade on this car is a new set of tires. I'm wondering if the dealer is negotiable there.

Can't wait until the snow melts so I can actually drive this thing. Watching videos is making me crazy

And TRD drop in intake filter or whole TRD intake. The drop in is the better bang for the buck for a pre 17 car but with the intake changes for better flow it is a bit redundant for the 17s. Not sure they even make one to fit the 17s yet anyway. Mine came with the TRD sways and I pulled them and sold them since I didn't like what they did to my DD. The TRD catback may not give much performance improvement (if any) but it sounds sweet and is covered by warranty if dealer installed.


Depending on the dealer the TRD add ons can be a great negotiating tool. They may not drop the car price but you can sometimes get the TRD stuff for free or at least at cost.
