Perrin CAI in the desert

I was thinking of going with a Perrin CAI, and was wondering how the filter does in the desert? We have dust storms once in a while that kick up really fine dust. I try not to drive at all in them, but sometimes you can't avoid it.

The Perrin will be a pain to clean as you need to remove bumper.

On an NA car it will gain you minimal power. An you will need to rescale maf sensor for it to work well.

If I were in a really dusty environment id keep the stock filter and airbox. Most aftermarket drop in filters wont filter as well as the stock filter.

The couple of hp increase is not really worth it

I agree. I had that set up before going FI and pulling the bumper is a pain.

Pain in the ass to clean it and no performance gain over stock. But it does sound really awesome.

Drop in KN filter. A new system won't help much, but a KN filter will keep nice flow and filtration, and a new intake tube will rid the air coming in of any turbulence the stock tube gives. My KN drop in filters pretty good and i live in south Florida, this place is full of dust.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I am going to throw a turbo on eventually. But if I have to pull the bumper to clean the filter every time I'll just wait or look into something else.

A drop in requires no bumper pulling, but good luck.

As per above. Drop-in air filter - just aftermarket air-filter element of stock sizing & to be used instead of OEM in stock airbox.
But, as thread title says about extra dusty environment, and as most often then less air filter resistance means also less filtering capabilities, then while OEM filter might be excessive for "normal" driving/city environment, thus no biggie replacing one that is chosen playing overcautious safe route by OE, then desert - certainly stock would be best choice. Exactly because there better filtering is not excessive.
P.S.
There might be alternative, such as TRD CAI. It may fit the bill better, that it gets less resistance/better flow not because of less filtering filter element, but because TRD's airbox is much bigger with bigger filter, thus less resistance is got via same airflow going through bigger filtering area, not via less filtering filter of stock size.

I run the Grimspeed intake and found I was collecting a lot of dirt on the filter. I have since bought a Perrin filter sock to go over the filter and it has made a world of difference. It keeps bigger particles like sand or even bugs from clogging up the filter.

Unfortunately such extra filtering sock WILL increase resistance to flow nevertheless, even if by itself it's not very resistive. Pressure drop gets summed up from filter beneath and this one. And if you are not getting expected performance increase from less resistive air filter yet require good filtering in over the norm dusty environments .. by then imho it's simpler and much cheaper to leave intake & air filter itself stock. (btw, also CAI, rather efficient and not that bad at all).

Sorry I didn't quote anyone, but I was referring to everyone above saying you have to pull the bumper to clean the Perrin CAI filter. I know you don't have to for a drop in. Thanks though.
