How bad is the AT's version of "MT" on your trans?

A buddy of mine owns an older Honda Prelude with CVT and he claims that the use of CVT caused his transmission to go to shambles. It's something I never really thought about but he was saying that because CVT forces your trans to swap back and forth gears, use of it is extremely horrible for your transmission.

I'm not really familiar with the transmission at all, I tried to do some research on my own and came up empty handed.

If someone could debunk this for me i'd really appreciate it, thanks!

CVT transmissions are typically put in non sports cars and Eco cars. It uses a drive belt inside the transmission to smooth the gear changes and use the centrifugal forces to pick the optimum and fuel efficient gear. Think of a 10 speed gear set on the rear wheel of a bike and the gears are automatically chosen for you and the chain is automatically used to switch to a different set of gears within a second for less stress on your legs.

There is no CVT....if you mean the manual shift feature it's a non issue. Use it till the paddles break it won't hurt the transmission at all.

Don't listen to your friend with anything about cars.
The prelude never came with a cvt.

Thumbs down

This is the worst thread on the internet. IT is a shambles.

Please read about what a CVT is. Here's a hint- it has no gears and it IS the transmission

But you're a good sport and that's what counts. Rock on.
With respect to using manual mode on an auto, it depends on the design of the transmission. For instance, the first generation of the Honda H5 was a disaster. Rumor had it manual mode was particularly rough on the clutch packs. I don't know all the specifics but it's one example.

The TX6A seems to be a fine transmission. It's been out long enough that we would've heard about any trending issues.

Thanks man, again my bad. It took me a few days to even consider posting this knowing I'd catch a lot of flak in my direction, I was just a bit confused and all as to how it actually worked. at least I know now though

Nah, don't waste time sweating it. Just have fun. You have to start somewhere. Best thing to do now is to google some of the terms discussed here; just enough to get a feel for them. Then come back and ask more questions.
