Suspension Upgrade 2013 using 2016 shocks? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hey all,

Sorry, but a very basic question regarding suspension. Seems to be a lot of barely used stick suspension from 2015 & 2016 BRZ/FR-S out there.
My question is, would it bolt onto my newly acquired 2013, without any ill side effects? I've read the 15/16 models have more road friendly & compliant characteristics. It's a DD so I'm not looking for ultimate track performance capabilities, just a smidge less harsh ride.

I may do an occasional track day at Roebling Road outside of a Savannah, but nothing to where I'll be pushing it. I leave that to my motorcycle roadracing track days.

Yes they will bolt right on with no issues. The difference in ride and handling is barely perceivable but there is a difference.

Hmm...never knew there was a valving change. I wonder if replacements from the dealer for my 2013 would be the revalved version, or if Toyota still supplies the original?

They would be two different part numbers so 13s would get the right ones.

Right, but that's assuming the 2013 part number didn't get superseded by the newer version. Or are you definitely saying Toyota still maintains two separate part numbers?

Different part number for each year.

2013 OEM Strut, RIGHT - 2013 Scion FR-S (SU00300382)

2016 OEM Strut, RIGHT - 2016 Scion FR-S (SU00305258)

Yes if you can buy them "used". To buy them new from a dealer there would be far better aftermarket choices for less money.

A few listed on Craigslist, inexpensive. If I went new it would definitely be aftermarket.

What @Tcoat said. If you can find them used, it might be worth while. A dealership would probably gouge you for them. I recommend driving a 16/17 and see if you feel its worth the hassle to swap the suspension into your car. Especially if you're doing to pay a shop to do it.

Edit. FWIW is find my car more compliant then in was on the stock suspension. Also, the RCE Yellows helped make the ride a little less harsh as well.

My 2013 shocks are likely due for replacement after winter (~135k km's, tons of track use and driving on Toronto streets), I'll definitely be looking for 2016 shocks.

Since you track your car, why not use that as an excuse for coilovers?

Because I can get a complete set of stock stuff for ~$200 with low km's, and any coilovers I'm interested in buying are $3500cdn+ (RCE T2's, JRZ RS or Tein SRC). Once I go down the coilovers path I'd also add camber plates and 9" wheels, it turns into $6k+ really quick.

Not sure it's worth the cost to me right now, especially with the little guy now.
