Is it possible to make Plastidip Permanent?

So I've heard that people put a clear coat over plastidip to make it permanent, and I wanted to know how if it's true.. Does anyone know if this works, or have an alternative way?

No. Plastidip is made to be peeled off so it doesn't matter what you actually put on top of it.

That being said,The more coats you use,the better it holds up over time. I dipped a white spoiler black no clear coat, and it's held up over the entire summer without any signs of distress. Waiting to see how it holds up over the winter though.

If you are doing wheels,I would say that the only way to possibly make them hold up better than normal is to primer the wheels first, then coat the shit out of each tire, then add your clear finish.Even then,I'm 99.999% positive that it can be removed without much trouble.

I used plastidip to black out a chrome grille on my old beater forester. I used automotive clear over it in several coats. It does add a shine that straight plastidip does not have originally.

Could not peel it off once the clear had cured. Looked exactly the same when I got rid of the car as well.

I'm guessing if you sat and picked at it, or cut the clear, or started it where maybe you didn't have great overlap on the backside or something you could get it to peel.

Good question! The plastidip coats with no original preparation, and it is cheap. In my instance I blacked out a grille, made it (at least somewhat) permanent, for around 20 bucks total and it made the beater look slightly better.

Do you have any experience with plastidip on high traffic-interior pieces. Say like a door sill?

Not one clue, I never wanted to use plastidip in any way shape or form until that grille piece. Even then it was a stretch.

I have a few pieces done. I would say you probably need to use a clear or matte finish to make it last.

I dipped my chrome Raceseng Ashiko shift knob. Had to redo it twice because I didn't put a finishing coat on after the red either time.On the third attempt,I put about three coats of matte finish after about seven coats of red(actually used the Duplicolor brand) and it's held up marvelously since mid/late July.

That's just the kind of review I was looking for. My buddy and I are looking for a solution on a Civic side project that we're working on. Toying around with different ideas for some door sills and other interior bits.

It's my understanding that a clear coat on top of Plastidip is to make it easier to clean. Dirt then less likely to adhere to it's surface.

And the more coats of Plastidip used, makes it easier to peel off when you want to remove it...thicker paint is easier to remove than thin paint.
