PA WTB: Winter Wheels and Tires

Preferably 16" wheels with winter performance tires (no studless or studded) for my FRS. Would like to find someone local but am willing to work out shipping. Steelies are OK. Thanks!

My knowledge of tire categories goes only as far as Tire Rack. They have 3 categories of winter tires: Studded winter, studdless winter, performance winter. My main point is the studdless winter (ex. Michelen X Ice) that seem very common to me do not have very good performance in wet conditions. I prefer to still have decent performance in other conditions as well as in small amounts of snow (4" or less). Thus I would prefer winter performance tires.

I would strongly suggest you reconsider your desire for "performance" winter tires. I live in the snow belt of central New York state, and our winter weather varies between sub zero temps and above freezing temps constantly, all winter long, with frequent mixes of snow and rain. "Performance" winter tires are a compromise; they are neither good performance tires nor good winter tires. They may be a bit better in winter conditions than "all-season" tires, but, in my opinion, not enough to make it worth investing in a second set of tires. They CERTAINLY aren't "performance" tires, either.

Get good snow tires. Blizzak, Michelin X-ice, and, for a bit less (usually), I've had pretty good luck w/ the Continental ExtremeWinterContact tires, too. They all do fine on wet roads, although you will notice wet road performance deteriorate quickly as you get close to the end of their tread life. If they get close to the wear indicators, it's time for another set, that's all. As long as you're good about swapping your tires in a timely fashion (i.e., don't drive on them until mid-June on searing hot roads.. learned that the hard way about 10 years ago), you'll get plenty of seasons out of them.

"Performance Winter" tires are sort of like "jumbo shrimp." They may be big for a shrimp, but they certainly wouldn't be considered "jumbo" in the grand scheme of things.

Drive safe.. enjoy winter. Can't wait!

Thanks for the info. After reading this and doing some more research on my own I am starting to lean toward tires more dedicated to winter. I'm hoping I can find a decent set for a bit less than buying new. I've already had a few pm's thrown my way so I may just end up with some X Ice tires.
