86 powered vintage 911 idea!?!

While I am not in the postion to do this, this recent posting on BAT brought this to thought. Install the 86 engine in an old 912 or 911 with no reason or ability to keep original. Our little engine would be great out of the box and with some minor tweaks even better. If seen the older WRX engines installed in 912's and 911's before and even a view 356 replicas and 912's.

While a great idea in concept, you will find that any 911 or 912 you find is worth a lot more as a restoration project.

Even my lowly 914 is worth almost $30k restored properly.
Now if you were to restore one to 100% original, take out the engine and set it on a shelf, THEN get the FA20 to work with no serious modifications, this would likely be worth MORE than the full resto by itself.
That would give an owner the ability to drive the car without wearing the original engine.

I have seriously considered restoring VW buses and installing a modern suby power plant with all of the modern conveniences.
You can get upwards of $50k for one of those done correctly.

The FA20 is already heat challenged as it is, removing it from airflow will prove a difficult task to master and you will need to completely rework an air cooled 911/2 to get everything running reliably.

I'd be hunting for a 924 if I was serious about cramming an FA20 in something, if you build it right it will likely be almost as quick as a stockish 86 because it will be lighter, hopefully you can keep the transaxle for better weight distribution, but not positive it will fit all that well, and how well the suspension can keep up despite rave reviews of the time, just a nice idea on paper. If you boost it that might be a compelling 928 build but most came with cool v8s to begin with, an early car would probably enjoy the upgrade.

This. All day long this.

Air cooled engines are a totally different design even though still boxers. You can not just slap a liquid cooled engine in place and expect all to be fine. By the time you rigged up a cooling system there would be very little left of the original balance and look of your Porsche.

If I have one of these I wouldn't even touch it, and probably ask Derek Bell to sign the dash.

no because FA20 is not known for reliability.

Why would you go to all the trouble to install a mediocre engine into a classic car?

I saw the title and thought Never posted this LOL. I didn't read any of the thread but I think swapping the fa20 into anything would be a huge clusterfuck with all the sensors and Toyota/Subaru bullshit

far enough, it was an ideal as I have seen WRX powered 911's, 912's, 914's and 356's.

There are dozens of Porsche 914s running around with WRX motors in them.
That is mostly because until about the last couple years you could buy a road worthy 914 for $1000 and didnt mind cutting them up a little to install a front mount radiator.
And I know of a few VW Buses with them as well (one is even a 4X4).

Now that rust bucket 911s are going for close to $20k, there are fewer people willing to modify one.

This 911 Singer 'resto-mod' sold for $350,000 yes THREEHUNDREDFIFTY thousand dollars.

Besides the WRX swap, I think if you want to do a Subaru engine in a 911, it should be an EZ30 or EZ36. The AVLS equipped ones should in theory be able to make some good power if you upgrade the parts.

If you have money for a 20-30k Porsche engine replacement, you definitely have enough money to both fit the EZ30 to the Porsche transmission as well as make it match a nerfed Cayman S's 295hp, except you don't have to deal with Porsche's stupid intermediate shaft design and weak cylinder walls, so I'd argue it's actually better.
