What if I plan on taking my STX prepped autox BRZ to SCCA Club Trials and have a 4 wheels off experience (or arrive exactly on time while finding puns on road signs)?
I should be able to choose more than 1. |

Numerically, what most of us do is SCCA Solo (autocross) and track lapping. Nobody would be interested in those builds, though.
What you're looking for is a tractor pull 86. Do that, and you'll definitely get the most uptweets on the 'gram. When people tire of the stance-and-wings JDM fetishism, you'll be right there with the New Thing: rake, mud tires, and chrome stacks. |

If we're voting on what we think is the most popular, autox is the answer hands down.
If we're voting on what we want to see you build, I vote SCCA/NASA. I want to see Spec 86 grow!

It all depends where you are.
I think this single photo may have more competing cars in it than most *regions*.

Most popular would be Forza 6 or Gran Turismo.

Confusing poll. Which is most popular or which do we want to see a build for? I want to see more rally builds so I voted that. I've seen the Dirtfish and Nameless cars in person and they're incredible.
If you're asking which is most popular among owners then its going to be autocross because it has the lowest entry barrier and the most attendees. BTW CSG Mike that picture is just a photo shoot isn't it?

I would love to see a competitive time attack build. I know Element Tuning does time attack, and I think Evasive Motorsports and Michele Abbate do time attack, but I don't think anyone else does.

The problem is that everything popular has already been done with these cars. At SCCA Solo Nationals, there are about 90 drivers of twins registered among the two biggest classes (CS and STX) in the event's 44-year history. Literally, the most popular form of motorsports is right here. True insight back by numbers. Some say exploring a progression path for these drivers with a full-tilt CSP or XP class build (campaigned by a hot shoe driver) would get a lot of eyes on your car. That would be boring, though.
Like you said, always be evolving. Land creatures evolved from early mudkips that crawled out of the ocean. Maybe it's time to evolve back? An amphibious 86 that can race on land and water is clearly the winning build of 2017. |

A company would be successful in proving the 86 can be reliable with really stiff spring rates, wide slicks, and aero. There will be interest in finding weak points and selling off-the-shelf upgrades for hubs, chassis weak points, etc. As our cars become cheaper and less competitive with newer cars in various racing categories in years to come, autocross and track builds will get wilder. A solid Solo Street Prepared or Prepared class build might be a good place to "hit 'em where they ain't" right now.
However, I really think the Hottest Build of 2017 will be playing god and creating a teenager who can turn into a 86 racecar and fight crime, like the 1980s cartoon Turbo Teen. No one will give a crap about autocross, track, or rally builds when you plumb the horrifying depths of "evolving."
