Wheel Lip

So I cant really seem to find a straight answer so I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am wondering what size tire I would need for my wheels so that I have the tire sticking out more than the rim itself, although I do love the look, I don't love being paranoid when parking and getting curb rash. I am currently running Ray Gram 57xtreme 18x 9.5 +40 wheels with Yokohama S-Drive 245/35 R18.

you would need 265/35R18 tires for more of a square/meatier set up and lip protection.

ideally 275/35 is needed to run true square to those wheels but you might have a hard time fitting that under stock fenders with those offsets.

Except these are Gram Lights 57xtreme... I had the same 18x9.5" wheels for a few months and even with 255 tires there was no way 265s would even come close to offering any lip protection.

Size is one thing. These wheels have a design to them that just prevents tires from looking anything but overly small on them...

The "protection" added by a tire is extremely minimal. I would not drive any different than you are now, even with a bigger tire. Tire brand and model will also change the size and how much of a "lip" the tire has. Example below.

Your tires spec. 8.8 tread width. 245/35/18

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....8SXL&tab=Sizes

Michelin tire specs. 9.2 tread width. 245/35/18
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....XLV2&tab=Specs

Tirerack has great info. Reading the actual spec of the tires, not just the Numbers on the tire, will give you a more accurate idea of what to order.

that is true. the design of the wheel spokes and the lip plays a major factor. no matter how big of a tire you cant always protect the lip or the spokes with a wider tire.
