Like my FR-S, but still like the feeling of my Celica GT-S
I got my FR-S (hot lava) on June 1st here in Sacramento, CA. I just got my plates today. I did the 1000 mile break-in and finally I took it through the hills from Winters to Napa. The handling is great and I love the rear drive. But, I have to say my 2002 Celica GT-S feels like it races through the gears quicker. The FR-S does seem to do better on the low end. I really thought that stock the FR-S would feel a little more powerful. It seems like the FR-S needs to breath a little easier. I will be curious to see what after market intakes and exhausts come out.
The one thing I noticed about my FR-S is the sticker in the door jamb indicating that the vehicle load rating was reduced by 8 lbs. I thought that was interesting. I am not one of the first 86, but mine certainly came somewhere around that. Anyone else have reduced weight sticker in their door jamb? brian |

One of the things I have trouble with is keeping it in the high rev range when trying to let out. Get it up there in first then keep it there. That's where the fun is. It will destroy your mpg rating, but that's what the car was made for. |

As an aid, I set my rev limiter to 5k. That way, when I see the light, I know I'll have the appropriate power. This comes handy when down shifting. At this point I am acclimated with the redline thanks to the use of the rev limiter. Now I will use the same technique to become aware of what gear to shift in for power. |

I guess they made the 2001 Celica GTS a lot faster than my 1991 Celica GTS. I was slooow. 135 hp. It's funny though, the speedometer went to 160 mph

I came from the 01 Celica GTS to the FR-S. I liked the shifter better on the GTS, but there's something about the feel of the wheel on the FR-S. They both handle well, but the FR-S feels better.

I miss the cam change over on the 2ZZ-GE engine. Always brought a huge smile to my face. However, with the FR-S I am grinning like an idiot on every single curve.

I had a 1986 Celica GT-S (the only generation to come with the 3S-GE) and it was a hoot. Compared to my FR-S though, all I gotta say is it's amazing how things have progressed in the 26 years between them.

I absolutely love the 2ZZGE engine in my Corolla XRS.
Sad thing is seeing less and less Celica GT-S and Corolla/Matrix XRS models on the road these days. I bet you theres probably more 2ZZGE Lotus Elise running around. |

Here's a dyno comparo of our FR-S and a customers 2zz-ge elise (both stock) ![]() To the O.P. brian, since you had a 2002 GT-S did you ever bother to swap out the ecu and knock sensor for a 00-01? (or go with a power FC + tune?) My celica was a 2002 with the action package, and it was the first thing I did. I hated that 7800 rpm fuel cut. |
