Thumbs down Peel Police "Excessive Noise Campaign"

Do not know if anyone else saw this, but it seems the Peel region police are cracking down on "excessive noise" from improper mufflers.

They state on their website their objectives of the campaign include:

- Apply a zero tolerance approach towards vehicles with improper mufflers.

- Reduce the number of vehicles operating outside the Ontario Highway Traffic Act regarding noise violations.

THIS concerns me the most:
- Improve road safety, driving performance, increase awareness by encouraging drivers to properly maintain vehicles, return altered vehicles to manufacture specification and to operate motor vehicles within the regulations of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

You can read about it more here:http://www.peelpolice.ca/EN/News/ind...5-ea29568095d5

I wonder what they could potentially do if they pull you over for this. I have got improper muffler tickets before, would they just continue giving tickets or actually pull your car off the road? What about motorcycles who are 10x louder! This seems so "excessive", to use their language.

Thoughts?

I feel like we are continually a targeted community. In my area (Vaughan) we see a variety of vehicles including imports, muscle cars, hot rods, high end sports cars, sport bikes and cruisers.

9 times out of 10 it's the modified imports I see pulled over on the side of the road. And plenty of the above mentioned we hocks classes (including others) are VERY loud from the factory.

The reality of it is, is some of us are a target already - we are/look modified and there for are "up to go good". But don't give the police a reason to pull you over and they will likely leave you alone.

I mean really, is a cop going to pull me over and be able to pick out which of my parts are factory and which are aftermarket? Probably not, unless they know that make and model incredibly well. So i find it hard to believe I'll get pulled over and someone's going to know what is and isn't modified and tell me to put it back to OEM.

Long story short, don't give the police a reason to pull you over and let them enforce whatever they want to enforce. If you're not doing anything wrong it shouldn't be a problem to begin with

It's pretty obvious on my car with a single exit and a big gaping hole on the other side...either way, this is ridiculous. Just another reason to love Peel's finest...

What upsets me the most is that Harley's especially are OBNOXIOUSLY loud. Standing outside a Tim's before in downtown Bolton, a Harley rips by and you literally have to stop talking for a second because you can't hear the person standing right beside you. But do you ever see them pulled over for noise infractions? No.

I agree with the post above; they're discriminating.

What classifies "excessive noise" or "improper muffler"? To me, a Harley is excessive but they are still around. Hell, don't some of the cops use Harley's ??

I think the "improper muffler" and "factory specification" is to cut back on people who chop their springs, run ridiculous amounts of negative camber and hack up their exhaust. It's just another money grab like emissions tests.

I am personally happy that they are targeting loud AF cars. Since my backyard is Southdown Rd, I know exactly how many insanely loud Honda Civics and old WRXs there are running around straight piped

They didn't specify what decibel level constitutes "excessive noise," nor did they specify any kind of measurement guidelines.

If you drive a car or bike in a public area with an noisy exhaust you are a self centred ****.

You just don't realise it yet.

Well, the cool thing about bikes, is that most of them come from the factory loud as fuck.

Cars on the other hand, generally don't. If you're going to delete cats, have exhausts over 95db, etc, then you're on borrowed time.

The other cool thing, is these initiatives/laws are written vaguely so that cops can use their judgement for what's too much. A friend of mine is a peel cop, and I asked him about this, he said to not do anything stupid while driving, and you won't have any problems.

Around here the excessive noise is usually from old farts driving riced up new mustangs.

Yesterday I saw two fat seniors splitting lanes on Warden pass the 401 bridge with big harleys.

Pretty sure these losers are way over the 96db noise level cap. Excessive means I can hear them from my living room many blocks away.

Me I just keep a copy of the JDM STI brochure at the front passenger seat rear pocket. It explicitly says the optional sports muffler meets all Japanese ministry of transport regulations which are way tougher than the ones here.

I mean, I get it. Forks of the Credit is probably hell on sundays for people who live on that road hence why they probably complain so much and hence why peel police are now doing something about it.

When I had my motorcycle I made a bunch of group rides and Peel region was always the go to area -- Badlands, Forks of the Credit, etc etc. My bike was straight piped, and though it wasn't a harley it made a lot of noise, but I toned it down in residential areas and areas of the Forks that had houses.

I guess my problem with this "Blitz" is that there's so many other issues on the road that need addressing first. The left lane hogs, the people who change lanes without signalling, the distracted drivers, the people who drive with 2/3 brake lights missing, the people who don't go into their own lane on right and left hand turns. The list goes on and on, loud vehicles shouldn't be the top of the police force's list, things that endanger other people's lives should.

Now when I'm driving in peel I'll just be in a higher gear since I'm running a catless front pipe and a muffler delete. Oh well.

Edit: just a bit of a personal level, I live in the heart of Vaughan on a busy road, I always hear loud cars and bikes driving down the road. The excessive noise lasts at most 4 seconds and then you move on with your life. Personally, I just can't see how anyone would make an issue out of this unless of course you live near the forks of the credit road or any other road where there are lots of group motorcycle and car rides scheduled and all you hear and feel is the earth shaking.

for the most part, the "annoyance" doesn't last long, and for the enthusiast it's nice to hear the distant sound of a car getting spanked on a road far, far away from you. That's just me at least, there's something comforting in knowing that the car culture is alive somewhere.

As much as it sucks, peel and York regional police are supposedly cracking down on modified cars this year more so than the past year (this is probably the line every year) but I think it's the responsibility of the owner to understand what he or she get into when modifying the car. As soon as you replace the exhaust to make it louder you open up yourself to risk...
The way I look at it is like if you're on the highway with 20 other cars doing 120, you accept that you are speeding but are playing the odds you don't get picked out of those 20 cars. I have a modified exhaust and I play the odds that with so many cars that come stock or have modified loud exhausts I won't be picked out (I make those odds better with my valved exhaust > ) but today if I got a ticket id understand.
You also have to understand that you are in a sports car so when he sees 10 cars that seem loud yours is the one that will probably draw his attention, it's bullshit for us but it's how humans (police men and women) work. I don't really notice the corollas with fartcans but if a loud ass supra comes by, that's getting my attention.

The only thing that properly pisses me off about the system is how Harley's get a free pass, they are air pollution factories on wheels, make THE most obnoxious sound an engine can make and normally have guns and roses blasting for the world to hear, yet I to this day have never seen one pulled over.
