Turbo kit directly from Subaru
I have an FR-S.
The other day I was was at a local Subaru dealer to get a Footwell lighting kit and got to talking to one of the service managers about forced induction. He mentioned that since I have an FA20 engine and the same engine goes into the Subaru forester (FA20 + turbo) that it was possible to buy all the additional parts in order to bolt on a Subaru turbo kit to the FR-S. I've attempted to Google this and search the forums but did not find anything. In theory his idea sounds plausible. Has anyone tried this? Would additional changes be necessary such as maybe stronger pistons, etc.? He was not certain but mentioned the parts to be around $1800, which sounds a bit low. He also mentioned that they could do they work, but only for out of warranty vehicles. Thought/Comments? |

Stock for stock it won't fit for many reasons. Better off buying an aftermarket turbo kit designed for the twins.

Quote:
$1800 for what? just the turbo? I think he is missing a zero in there. Yeah sure they can do the work, but you want mechanics who work on stock cars all day to work on your modified vehicle? The guy is just pulling your leg. Ask him to make a quote for parts and labor, see how fast he disappears or makes excuses. |

It's worrying when service managers start to make claims like these.

Time to find a different dealer. The FA20 in the frs/brz is entirely different. All the way from the ecu to fuel system. Not to mention the exhaust exits to the other side of the motor. The wrx or legacy also uses a different oil pump, rods, pistons, cams and so on.
I personally started over a year ago thinkong a $6400 kit was possible and now I'm nearly 10k doing it all myself. So many supporting mods was required to make the car a daily driver it's nutz. If you don't have atleast 10k for the kit, supporting mods and tune. Quit

LOL I say OP takes the car and lets them do it and once they realise they are wrong he can fight them (provided he gets the quote to install a turbo on paper) and get them to make it work for $1800 at the expense of his warranty

I say do it, service manger sounds like he totally knows what's involved with converting a factory N/A engine to a turbocharged one. 10/10 would recommend

People would swap the head of the 2jzgte to the block of the 2jzge. The only differences with the blocks were oil squirters for the pistons on the turbo block. This was done to save money in cases where this could be an option. Everything from the top was different. Maybe the blocks on the FA20 are the same but you would need everything else in the engine bay except the battery and fans--maybe a few other items. But what he proposed is ridiculous. There is no savings here.

Someone in Austria did the swap. He imported a brand new fa20dit engine from Japan. Issue was that he couldn't get any certifications and the car wasn't road legal. From my point of view, it doesn't worth it.
