Official: 2017 Acura MDX Teased, Will Debut In New York! Bye Bye Bird Beak?

After updating the MDX for 2016MY with new equipment, Acura has announced plans to unveil a new version of the SUV in late March, at the 2016 New York Auto Show.

The model is described as "redesigned and reengineered" and is said to be visually different than its predecessor, featuring new convenience and comfort features, as well as new powertrain technology.

"We are sharpening our focus on the Precision Crafted Performance DNA of the Acura brand and the 2017 MDX will integrate new styling elements and powertrain technology that takes us another step in that direction", commented Executive VP of American Honda, John Mendel.

The 2017 Acura MDX was designed by the company's studio in Torrance, California and it will be produced at the Lincoln, Alabama, facility, alongside Honda Pilot, Odyssey and Ridgeline. From early next year, an additional production source will be added at East Liberty, Ohio, after an $85million investment.

The East Liberty Plant currently assembles the RDX SUV, the Honda Crosstour and CR-V. Both factories will use domestic and globally sourced parts for the 2017 MDX production.

Further details on Acura's best-selling SUV, which topped 50,000 units in each of the past three years, will be released on March 23, when it will debut in New York.

I'm not familliar with the Acura nomenclature so before I read your post I was excited and "OMG is this the mini NSX?".

My excitement dropped quickly.

Looking slightly sportier than its predecessor, the facelifted model has a new front fascia with a "diamond pentagon" grille and restyled Jewel Eye headlights. The crossover has also been equipped with new LED fog lights and revised side skirts with chrome accents. Changes are less noticeable out back but include a new rear bumper and a dual exhaust system.

The interior is instantly recognizable but Acura added an electric parking brake and four new USB charging ports. A variety of options will be available and higher-end variants feature a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera, and Olive Ash Burl or Black Limba wood trim.

The 3.5-liter V6 engine carries over but it will be joined by a new MDX Sport Hybrid. The model has a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain that consists of a 3.0-liter V6 engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and three electric motors. This setup enables the model to produce a combined maximum output of 325 horsepower which is 35 more than the standard model.

Despite being more powerful, the MDX Sport Hybrid is expected to significantly more fuel-efficient as Acura estimates the crossover will return 25 miles per gallon city / 26 mpg highway / 26 mpg combined.
The 2017 MDX is slated to go on sale on sale this summer and the MDX Sport Hybrid will arrive shortly thereafter.
