So im taking some autobody/ welding classes now and have decided to take on a new project. I want to take a swing at a center exit exhaust.
I came across glasspacks and was pretty interested, what do you guys think?

They are cheap and and will degrade rather quick, then at that point it will just be loud and create drone. these are also not a substitute for a muffler

I second that and personally hate glasspacks as they do not sound good at all

Congrats on learning to weld! It's a great skill to have.

Buy something that is meant for our cars. My .02$ glass packs are for lowriders. I had em on my 1980 buick regal. It was primer grey. Lol

True, after doing more read watch I am now leaning away from the glass pack. Still aiming for a center exit exhaust haha

It doesn't matter who makes it, Cherry bomb, Dynomax, Magnaflow, the glass packs are designed to burn out (see their marketing for break-in) over time and will get really loud. They were designed in the 50's for guys who wanted to run straight pipes when laws that required the use of a muffler were coming into effect. This was well before decibel laws.
If you want a decent bullet style resonator to use as a muffler, you'll end up spending just as much as if you bought a cheap Vibrant, Magnaflow, or Dynomax muffler.
I have used the Dynomax bullet presilencer on multiple rotary track applications, but I recommend paying up and getting a round Magnaflow if you want to use a round muffler.

Look through the plethora of exhaust threads on this forum. These cars run very aggressive cam and ignition timing and have 12.5:1 compression, all of which create a very LOUD exhaust. A lot of people on this forum spend tons of money on exhausts, just to start a for trade thread a month after their neighbors call the police on them every morning.

I remember having a twin glasspack setup on my carb'd 81' 280ZX. Spoiler alert: It was loud.

Actually the higher quality glass-packs -like the Thrush piece- function great when used as a resonator. Used one of them on a custom system that was built for my old 323GTX when the resonator that was in the Greddy front pipe rotted out. Improved the sound, too.

You know - I may actually have spares of both the resonator and muffler from that setup. Think I may try and build the same exhaust for the FRS-turbo and see how it sounds!

There's not a ton of space (lengthwise) between the diff and bumper, I don't think you'd fit any sort of glasspack/resonator lengthwise in there. You'll need a muffler that sits sideways behind the diff or a piece of straight pipe.
