From what I have read it looks like this Parrot ASTEROID Smart will not have access to the google play store but their own market called ASTEROID Market. If that's the case then I fear that we wont have all the apps that we have come to love.

This is an awesome thread if you not opposed to doing a little fabricating in your new car http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16435
I'm going to attempt to to this in during the winter.

It's Android so I'm sure it could be jailbroken. I wonder how many people will be crashing their cars while playing angry birds?

Android apps should still work since this is still an Android 2.3 OS at it's heart. It just has a heavily modified GUI. I think the Asteroid Market will be a specific, tailored market place with apps either developed by Parrot or will host apps that are for the Android Based Car Audio segment. But hey... I could be wrong

I think you're right because I see they've got TuneIn Radio on there which was not developed by Parrot. Unless it's a closed system with only specific "approved" apps.

your Kenwood system seems like a good unit, and you actually have a radio where the illumination of the buttons actually matches the the dash lights...

Thanks, yeah you can customize the button colours to pretty much anything you want.

I had 4 requirements:
-Plain looks
-Physical volume knob
-Bluetooth with external mic
-No detachable face

The Kenwood ticked all those boxes. There were Sony and JVC units with nicer features but they were too "flashy".

The Parrot doesn't have a volume knob which is a real pity but I still want it.

isn't it a problem to have that volume button on the left? I like in the stock unit that it's on the right. the parrot also has a detachable front, so i hope it doesn't rattle.

Nope, it's easily reachable or maybe I'm just used to it by now.

Looks like it's just part of the Parrot that detaches(on the left) so it shouldn't rattle. I hope.

I'm kinda annoyed that I've spent all that money on the Kenwood and now I want the Parrot but I couldn't handle that Hilux radio anymore, it was just too horrible for words.

Ok, so here's the quote from Caska. The unit alone is R10999 but comes with garmin navigation and 2yr access to maps.

The unit can also take input from pdc, reverse camera and a tire pressure management system which caska also sells.

I've asked for another quote and trying for some discount since 11k for a unit is a bit high for my liking.

They've already fitted this to an 86 which they gave me pictures for. Not fond of the camera location and will think of putting it in the muffler garnish below instead.

That camera looks horrible, it should be on the black plastic.

Google Caska, there are some very mixed reviews. I wouldn't pay that much for something from China to be honest.

Most of the LCD radios can take a reverse camera.

Yeah. I'm a bit apprehensive myself. Would rather get a good kenwood like you but also want built in Nav and the full 20cm unit. I'll hopefully get to see yours on the 4th and then decide if the std 18cm with spacers looks good enough. I think it will.

Thanks, Sav

No problem. It's a difficult decision - function or form.

I'd forget about the Kenwood and get the Parrot though. Or you could buy my Kenwood as soon as I've gotten the Parrot. The Kenwood doesn't have nav though.

Either way, the Caska looks as neat and OEM as it's ever going to get, there is no denying that, I just feel that there are better units from better manufacturers at lower prices.

Have a look on the Toyota.co.za site, I think the Land Cruiser 79 takes the same shape unit as the 86. It's about the same price as the the Caska one I think but then it's a proper Toyota Nav unit...

Part numbers: PZN63U0011

5.8" Colour LCD, touch screen full Navigation system radio - CD/MP3/WMA, USB, iPod-ready, SD, Bluetooth and Audio Streaming.

That's the one from Toyota but there is no pic unfortunately.
