Are there any good Arai auto-racing helmets in the entry level price range, similar priced to the HJC AR-10 & SI-12, less than <$400?? The GP5 and GP3 look nice..but crazy expensive.

Nope, unless you want to buy used or an Arai motorcycle rated helmet.

Currently a Bell GP2. Thinking about a GP2 Carbon just for the bling.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but try on every helmet you can find before buying one. It's a hassle to deal with shipping back and forth and different helmets fit differently - even different models from the same manufacturer.

For Bell I have to go Racer or above for the additional sizes to get the correct fit. Arai doesn't fit my head well, HJC some do, some don't. Simpson some do, some don't..

More info on that new Racequip helmet:

http://blog.motovicity.com/?p=2363

I really think this is the best full face helmet on the market for under $200 retail. High recommended, and extremely lightweight.

I use the Bell Sport Mag. It's easy to breathe and talk in, light weight (ish), SA2010 rated, and lots of autocross guys use them. Highly recommended.

The front visor cracks easily if you treat it poorly, and there are quite a few stickers to remove... but no real gripes after a year of use.

Our region uses those for our loaner helmets. They seem nicer than the old HJC CL5s that we used to use before they expired.

I just ordered an HJC AR10 II. What sold me on it was the removable washable interior and the seemingly endless great reviews of its "bang for buck".

I hope it fits proper as my head measurement was just at the end of the medium range.

And offer a built-in mike and earphones that offer significantly better audio than a Chatterbox or the like.

And offer an intake that feeds air in over the top of your head. Instead of just looking cooler, why not be cooler?

And offer an integrated drinking system so you can stay hydrated on those warm summer days.

So, yeah, higher-end helmets with lots of bells and whistles cost a lot, and not everyone will want to or be able to buy one. If you can swing the initial cost, though, and you want or need the features, you'll be amortizing it over the ten years or so that you'll be enjoying it.

Oh, sure - there are definitely reasons why you might want a higher end helmet rather than a cheap one. Safety just isn't one of them (as long as the cheap one still meets all the applicable standards).

Didn't mean to leave the wrong impression, because AFAIK you're quite correct.

Aaaaand my Bell M4 helmet came in from CSC Racing (the only official Bell vendor up in TO) and it was WAY oversized. For whatever reason, they measured me up as an XXXL.

Now to keep this in perspective and to give CSC props for recovering from this mistake, when I contacted them today (I received it yesterday at 6:30pm), they were very friendly and offered to pick it up on their own dime and get me a new one ASAP.

I measured myself this time and have no idea how they got me as a XXXL. I measure myself 6 times (I kid you not) and got around 60cm to 62cm which according to Bell's sizing chart here (http://www.bellracing.com/about/sizing) puts me in the XL range (which is what I've used in the past with Arai, HJC and Shoei).

Will update when they pick it up and I get my new proper fitting helmet.
