"Save" is a relative term. Likely if it was warranty, they would just throw a short block in it and not rebuild it anyway. As much of a PITA it is labor wise to rebuild a boxer bottom end, it's usually not any more cost effective then just replacing it. Might have just saved head damage at best.

Oh really? Not all the time.... Matter of fact I have an 53k mile engine in my garage right now from a 2013 complete FRS that I bought because the engine was knocking. Oil pickup was plugged from a shoddy valve spring recall. I drove the car home knocking, 40+ miles at Interstate speeds. Rods never let go....matter of fact it still turns over.

I'd bet there is a whole lot more to this story...
lack of oil from owners own maintenance, tuned ecm, data recorder shows something abusive...

My FA20 threw the rod after spinning the bearing. Lost oil pressure from kicking out a rocker arm before a downhill blind right hand corner. Tried to nurse it to a safer spot on track to pull to the side and it went.

I can't even imagine them swapping heads over.

Keep running it and let us know how long it goes without windowing the block, because it will.

He does note he did a fresh oil change with 5w-30 the day prior to this. It's really unknown until an engine teardown is done to confirm if there's a crap ton of silicone clogging the pickup, but I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility the oil change was underfilled.

I'm not attacking the owner, but I've seen a lot of people think they're all good to go, like putting on a new filter, filling up to the "full" dot, and calling it day. As much as I autocross, I prime the system, start the car, drive it around, and come back to top up whatever might be needed. A lot of times people are running their cars a quarter of a quart under that full mark, or more. Which might be ok for the street, but then toss some good G's on the track at it and you could put yourself at risk.

But who knows. All just speculation. Can't simply just blame it on RTV and Toyota/Subaru and call it a day. There are many pickups out there with a good bit in/on them and limited failures.
Is 5w-30 specified for standard use in the owners manual?

It's not on the fa20, and has been grounds for warranty denial in the past

It's also not very conducive to be using a track video for reasons to not void a warranty

"Thanks for buying a GR86. Here's a free track day since we want people to believe we built this car for good safe fun. Just don't use it and take a video or your warranty is void."
See how ridiculous it sounds?

That isn't at all factual though.

1. There's no indication he ever used the free track day.
2. There's multiple indications he bought it as a dedicated track toy in the drive article.
3. He specifically states it's a warm up lap for later laps. As well as indicating he's been on the track before.
4. Toyota endorses/warranties the car for (1)one track day not multiple.

There's got to be a limit somewhere...

but even if we ignore the toyota/track day thing, he acknowledges he filled the motor with 5w-30, which it should be getting 0-20 by their manual, which is absolutely enough of a reason to deny warranty coverage.

Has the manual changed? The old manual still said that was a permitted formulation.
