And what does $15,000 buy you? Besides a fairly used 86 or a nice motorcycle?

Quad-adjustable motorsport-quality coilovers, apparently. Too rich for my blood; I'll stick with springs and shocks.

A full battalion of squirrels (500 - 800) at your command. Traps are ~$30.

I would say that buying a motorsports damper to run on a strictly street car is a colossal waste of money, no matter how much street cred it gets you. Even if you run a few track events a year...the streets where I live would not treat some of the shocks mentioned here very kindly. No dustboots, no bumpstops, very low drag seals...expect rebuilds early and often. Yes, even with some of these ultimate level shocks...frequent rebuilds are expected and part of the design parameters. Yes the valving is great, but these are track shocks first and foremost. The city and suburban streets around here are very different (especially after this horrid winter).

The beauty of a "road and track" shock like the Ohlins or Bilstein PSS10 is that they are very good on the track and very good on the street without being very expensive. Durable, good valving, and just plain easy. Easy to drive, easy to have serviced, and relatively easy to set up. For most drivers, they will not be the limiting factor at the track.

If you're trying to set lap records, yes you can spend more money on a 4 way motorsports shock. Then make sure they're set up correctly. You can always spend more money. We can help with that, but more important for most of us is to learn how drive fast.

Andy,

Would road and track coilovers such as the ones your mentioned or RCE T0's require servicing more frequently than a normal strut would require replacing?

That's exactly what I was getting at with my earlier question! I wouldn't have an issue splurging if it wasn't going to mean annual downtime for rebuilds, but for a car that is truly daily driven that's just not something I want to deal with.

Im still wondering if thats the case with their entry level stuff.

None of them will try to sell you a motorsports shock for a daily driver, whether it's an "entry level" motorsports line 2 way or a full on race 4 way.

JRZ has their RS line, which are what I would call a clubsport damper (I don't like the term entry-level). The goal with these is a damper with advanced internals that can also hold up to real world street abuse. We worked with them on their Subaru development (both Impreza and BRZ) and the valving is very good. They are not "cheap" but that quality of valving and the support you get with them costs money. They're continuing to work on durability and it's improving.

The RS Pro is somewhere between a clubsport type and motorsports damper.

I can't speak for Penskes as I just don't have 1st hand experience with them. I'm sure they can be built just the way you want as that's the Penske way to do things (bring money).

If you asked Ohlins about TTX for your daily driver, they'd politely point you towards their Road & Track coilovers. TTX are durable, but they're also designed to be user serviceable and revalveable. They're simply not a shock designed for dude's going grocery shopping.

I guess what I'm getting at is...if I had unlimited dollars to spend on suspension for a daily driver and occasional track day BRZ...would I get 4 way motorsports JRZs?

Well yeah maybe . Because racecar, squirrels, and bragging.

BUT the smarter thing to do would be something like Bilstein PSS10, Ohlins R&T, RCE Tarmac 2. At a lower cost, RCE T0, custom Bilstein B6 and RCE Yellows, whatever floats your boat.
