If you are going to go through the trouble of tossing a set of rods in, it would make very little sense to not also put a set of pistons in. It's kind of like replacing a clutch and not replacing the throw-out bearing. You are in there anyway so you might as well eliminate the other potential weak point. Budget and performance are a difficult concept to juggle. I recommend saving up and perhaps dialing your tune back until you can afford to break stuff.

How important is a AOS catch can? Has anyone ran their FI motor without it for some time? I know I need to pick it up soon, what issues will I be looking at without one? Just waiting on PXXXXN to release it soon (I get local discounts).

Its a little more than that. I'm on e85 and have no want to lower compression. If I lower it ill end up wanting to run a larger turbo or if I put in custom cp pistons that are near factory compression they get very expensive quickly. Much more so than the off the shelf 10:1 pistons cost. @nelsmar went with 11:1s but at quite a price iirc. So what I'm seeing is 10:1 pistons and run upgrade to a r30 or 35 (which is pricy) or keep my gtx28 run stock pistons on e85 and change out just the rods for some peace of mind at over 400

IIRC I cracked one ring gland on a non failed cylinder. Though its hard to tell I would have to verify my pistons. There was wear on the side of the piston and some rings were seized in.

As for pistons custom spec CP pistons are actually quite affordable. Most of my cost went into my custom spec rods, and the fact I had upgraded wrist pins, and coatings applied to my pistons. The down side is the wait time is something like 6-12 weeks typically but I really can't remember! I would upgrade them personally if you have the time to wait. If you are having a problem getting the pistons you want I am sure you could call goodspeed (who has been a big part of my build) and they can order custom compression for you.

Hard to say without pulling your intake manifold and looking at the intake ports to see how much coking and oil is in there. I would at least make sure you have a check valve in the PCV line so that you aren't pressurizing your crank case under boost.

Personally I would run one moving forward. I did it for 12k miles without. There was sludge in the intake runners. Nothing out of the ordinary though. I actually expected a lot worse to be honest. I always had more of an issue on boosted hondas than I had on this. I would recommend looking into one to reduce buildup.

@Cross
@C130NAV
@kingkai23

Anyone know of any others?

He has another thread and is doing a LS swap now, but I can't find it. It sounded like he had a cam failure of some sort, not a bottom end failure.

Cross mentioned it in his I need a new motor thread in the Forced Induction forum. I don't think @lexusb3 's motor blew. I think he just sold it to someone. I don't know that the other guy with the TR3 built motor is on the forum and the list is only for forum members. I did hear about an Arizona motor that just blew, so I need to track him down.
