This car (our car) is an emotional choice more than anything else. It doesn't make sense and it probably shouldn't exist... Yet that's not the problem. The problem is me and my weakness to be emotionally stirred.
If you shut off your emotional side, you most definitely won't feel one with this car. In comparison to the other vehicles, the Toyobaru is a driver's tool. It's sharper, you get more feedback, it's simply more in sync with the nut behind the wheel. It's a visceral experience which is rare for one to find these days. Opinions and thoughts are going to vary as always... So choose wisely on what's best for you... But don't forget to leave some emotion on the table, @saif.

The twins are made for Fun only..For function and comfort that's when the 2nd car comes in which most of us who own a twin has one as a DD.

And here I am as the odd ball who is considering a motorcycle and treating the BRZ as the comfortmobile.

Im planning on staying in the states for all of my college. Unless I plan on studying abroad for maybe a semester, in which I dont see myself having a car overseas for that long. However, I am a sophmore in college and am doing wonderful. 3.79 with an outlook of a 4.0 for this semester, with hopes of transfering to W&M. So if I keep it up I wont see myself going overseas for med school.
Kids? hahahaha I dont plan on anything like that for a while. I dont have a girlfriend nor intend on a serious one to come for a while. The picture I posted is somewhat older, I have recently fixed those terrible headlights. Dont know why they oxidize so easily and have done what I think are good mods. I have a CAI and TRD lowered springs along with the usual Audio upgrades and tinted windows. It does the trick, but the 170ish horsepower along with the heavy weight and some laughs I get from fellow car enthusiasts when I tell them its a "sports" car is kinda pushing me away from it. Plus brother is getting his license soon and am looking to keep it in the family and give it to my brother and let him ride it out till it dies. I want to be able to keep the next car for atleast 10-15+ years and have parts available for it at that time. Seeing the already HUGE aftermarket on the FRS is a huge plus and I know since its a Toyobaru mix it wont be lacking in parts in the future incase of any breakdowns or upgrades needed. Same applies to the Gen coupe. I know my Solara is 9 years old this winter and just hit 100,000 miles and will last me another 100,000 miles. Another thing is I do 99% of my own work on my car, so I can do the simple maintenance on my car up to changing major components. So one thing I also am looking for is ease of working on the car and seeing some of the basic repair videos of all the cars it seems that it would be easy. This is where the problem comes in with the Solara. Im spending more on the upkeep and modding it than I would financing a car. Looking at my car related expenditures over the summer would have been more than enough to cover a downpayment on a new car. So it brought me to also think that why dont I get a car in which I dont have to mod to make it "cool" or sporty" and have fun with it while it is stock and then in the future when I have time and money I can mod it and make it different IF I want. Why isnt anyone mentioning the Golf GTI?? The biggest down of that car is its german and will cost a ton to repair, or atleast I think. Genesis coupe and FR-S are really what I'm battling between. Unless toyota makes a TRD edition Prius with specs and performance of the other cars with the same fuel economy. Think its called the Prius Plus Edition?(minus the "perfomance and specs of the other cars") hahahaha Im waiting to test drive them both asap after hearing back from both of you guys. I have a friend that owns both the FRS and Genesis coupe and she says that both of them are really fun to drive and are wonderful cars however the genesis is more luxorious and it sure seems like it. However It boils down to branding for me. Hyundai isnt that well established in my head, though they are uprising. Toyota is something that rings a bell in my head with great experience, especially since the FRS is assembled in Japan! and the Gen is built in America Parents owned a Highlander built in Japan and it was AMAZING quality and nothing went wrong whereas any american assembled car that we have had has its problems such as my solara. They forgot to put in several seals around the base of the car and had caused water to come in. They fixed it and replaced the carpeting and everything but then it caused a short in my passenger airbag and is something that took forever to fix and took a ton of money to repair. So anything american assembeled, I take with a grain of salt. Even though correlation does not mean causation. The picture below is before I lowered it |

If you're considering build quality don't think Toyota. It's a quirky-as-fuck Subaru.

Biggest downside is FWD, and most of us bought the twins because they are rear wheel drive. The GTI and FR-S/BRZ cater to very different demographics.

Two comments:
The new VW Golf is made in Mexico and Highlander is now made in Indiana. But I agree, JDM produced Toyotas are just a bit better than North American product in terms of fit and finish. I think most of us here discount Golf or most any other F/F platform cars due to the inherent balance and subjective feel of an F/R (or M/R) platform. Go to your nearest closed course road circuit on a track day and you'll be hard pressed to find any F/F cars. Last edited by torqdork; 11-06-2014 at 01:03 AM. |
