In before the in before posts.

On a serious note, has this been tested? Are there at least any theoretical numbers?

They're straight-cut gears with syncros. So it's not technically a dogbox as it still has the synchros but has the strength of the straight cut.

Gear cuts are straight or helical
Engagement is synchomesh or dog

A quick primer on these things.

Now on to the music! The PARs aren't super loud, but he does have a an open wastegate drowning them out.

So, about this gearbox, second AND fourth break? Cripes, man. I am so relieved I never had any intention of cranking up the power more than 25%. New cars are so fragile with the manufacturer building them "just" strong enough to try and save costs. Step one is re-engineer a hand grenade transmission? I already have a hand grenade oil pump on the GT-R, I don't need another EOD mission on my daily driver.

Can't wait to see your results. If you don't post video, though, the kitten gets it. Think of the kitten!

Quit trying to out think the engineers and just drive the car.

It depends...

All else being equal, straight-cut teeth are "weaker" than helical teeth. In a helical gear (diagonal-cut) the teeth gradually come together at the sides, rotating through and gradually lifting at the opposite side. With straight-cut gears the teeth smack into each other all at once. This creates the characteristic whine, but also a lot of shock stress on the teeth. Helical gears also distribute the forces through more material. All else is probably not equal here, though. I'm guessing the alloy and manufacturing process for these are far better than the stock gears.

There's also a trade-off with helical gears as they transmit forces axially (red arrows), putting stress on the bearings and transmission case. Lower angled gears reduce these forces, and straight-cut gears nearly eliminate them. With our boxes, though, AFAIK this hasn't been been an issue. But if the teeth can hold, it's one less thing to worry about down the line.

Anyway, I'm interested to see how these perform. Keep us updated.
