It can happen at any mileage; I've seen a LOT of cars get the beginning symptoms of this failure. My understanding, is that the band-aid repair (replacing parts) is delayed at the moment due to a large backorder on the parts.

That reflash has nothing to do with this issue, it is likely this:

Which was done for vague "emissions" reasons and to "fix" the idle dip.

Literally if you have any issues with this car, its going to be out of service for at least a month.

I expected this shit when I owned a Lotus, but not from a major OEM.
Love your videos, brutally honest.

Hi guys,

I registered here to give my support to Mike — this thread is starting to make its way around the internet and I've been following it with interest.

The way this issue is being handled by Subaru (and not the issue itself — I get that new cars have teething problems, it's how they're dealt with that counts) has cost them a sale.

I've been trying to decide between this car and a Mazda MX-5 as a second car for spirited country road driving and occasional track use, and this thread fills me with horror. I've had cars like this in the past — most recently, a Mazda RX-8 R3. The dealer knew I tracked it, and often had conversations with me about how the car performed on track. Still, Mazda honoured the warranty for every problem I had, with the mutual understanding that if I modified something, the warranty on that part would be void.

Sure, the warranty wording may allow the manufacturer to pull the entire warranty if they suspect you're racing it, but advertising a car for track use then confronting your customers with printouts of forum posts that've been misinterpreted… come on, that's just not cricket.

Car enthusiasts like the people who inhabit this forum are very important customers for manufacturers who make these kinds of cars. We're smart, passionate people who will as a huge community support companies that treat them fairly and with respect, and turn against companies who try to nickel and dime their customers and treat them like idiots.

In this instance, I've been pushed right back into the arms of Mazda — a company I know treats guys like me well. If someone from Subaru is reading this thread — and I hope they are — this will be my fourth Mazda. You get that kind of loyalty not by paying out on every false warranty claim, but by treating your customers with respect and fairness.

I hope everything gets sorted reasonably, Mike!

@iKenndac: Thanks for your post. Let us know how the MX-5 goes. It's on everyone's short list.

@Dezoris: excellent job on the video. Thanks.

So, you figure we'll see a redesign on these injectors in future model years?

Don't know, I am not an engineer, but chances are we will see something from the aftermarket more robust in terms of either seals or injectors.

Thanks for doing that video. I've enjoyed all the others too!

Was the 18 hours mentioned for the labour tongue in cheek or would that be a genuine estimate of the time involved? It's been suggested it's much quicker than that and I missed the sarcasm, which is likely.

Edit - Just read your new thread and it's about 5 hours so i'd better sharpen up on my sarcasm meter.

Yeah its been an ongoing joke everything we do on the car. Whenever we say 5 hours its always 18.

But yeah expect 5 hours total if you dont have leaks or drama.

If the factory tune didn't have any destructive combustion, we wouldn't need better injector seals....

I've been begging Toyota and Subaru for the factory patch to retard the transition tables but they say it's not available yet.
All they have to do is copy a post 21-1-13[1-21-13 for you guys up there] ECU map and use it for the earlier cars.
