Question for MD Members..

If I were to purchase a modified (Turbo or supercharged) 86, is it possible to pass inspection and Emissions and actually get a title and tags for it in MD??

Some examples of past and present for sale cars that I wonder if I could even drive/enjoy if I purchased them:

The problems you will have start at inspection. Modified cars tend to fail inspection, that being said I don’t know of any specific provision in the inspection guide that would actually fail an aftermarket boosted car from passing. On the emissions side it depends on whether or not the ecu honestly reports it’s status…. That’s a bit greyer area but most tuners generally tell the ecus to “fib”

If it's anything like Colorado, you *should* be fine if it's a CARB/EO certified system. This will probably be your best bet.
Local state laws may have different limitations though, so it's not a guarantee. Take Jackson Racing's Supercharger kit for example; it's 50 state legal, and the emissions facility may do a checksum on the ECU to ensure that's what's actually installed. The only catch is that the CARB/EO tune is only certified to work with the parts that are in the kit, so it is what it is, no "legal" way to modify further to get more power.

Check with some local tuning shops, they'll probably have the best insight for what mods pass and what don't.

The above shows what they are looking for in an inspection. Understand this is not any other state, this is Maryland. Maryland treats themselves differently, we don't even have a DMV here, they call it the MVA. It depends how the ECU is tuned. The other problem is in Maryland, technically any modification is illegal. So you can pass both inspections, then get a repair order from a cop and be forced to return the affected component to stock. Speaking from experience as a MD resident w/ a currently tuned turbo brz on a built IAG motor.

As someone who has tagged more than 25+ cars in MD and dealt with inspections and emissions, the biggest things for inspections are making sure all the basics are in good working condition but for modded cars you must have a muffler. I’ve had cars fail for not having one or for other issues (rotors too thin, etc..). Emissions can actually be passed without cats sometimes if you can get lucky at the emissions stations (sometimes they don’t bother with the visual check or just assume you have them), so long as you car is running within the proper allowance (not too rich, etc..). For emissions your ecu is checked so that can sometimes get a red flag but I’ve never had any issues (I’ve never added any type of forced induction added to any of my cars though, but have had many with modded ecu’s).

I also want to note that MD will not pass a car with any aftermarket window tint (trucks can’t have the front two windows tinted), UNLESS you get a waiver signed by a doctor providing a valid reason why you need the window tint. You also have to get this signed off at a MD state police office as well in order for the inspection station to grant you a PASS on the inspection. This is something fairly new that many don’t know about.
