For what it's worth, speculation over at SupraMKV is that Subaru is doing 90% of the gen 2 design and engineering. Rumor, again, is that it will be on a SGP platform.

i don't really see why it wouldn't. subaru already allotted the factory space for the gen 1. for toyota to take over production, they'd need to re-tool another factory.

If they do then it really supports the people that say Toyota is just throwing the Supra badge at random cars.

And that is what the claimed insiders there are saying. Another SupraMKV rumor tidbit is that Tada is nothing more than an advisor/cheerleader for this effort with no real authority. Subaru is fully in charge of this effort.

That makes me nervous about wether or not Tada's vision will survive into the 2nd gen. Subaru's leadership may very well have directed the project in a way that holds true to the 1st gen's vision, but they may also not have.

Tada is a face used exceptionally well by the marketing team.

His imput, would be alot less than alot of people realize.

Yes he has a "vision", but that, well marketed vision, only goes so far.

Meh, only replying because I'm bored...

You're probably right, my concern is still that the development team could have fallen into the trap of making it a little more powerful, and adding a little more tire, and adding a little bit more insulation, aaaaand bam 3100lb car.

we probably won't know until at least a year from now anyway.

A lot depends on the scope of the project. If they decide to keep it a low volume niche car it may stay light and relatively basic. If they decide they are looking for volume and general public appeal then god only knows where they will take it.

The DSM/Eclipse progression shows what can happen when they go for the mass market.

Is this really how we want the 86 to evolve?

Focus: Performance, power and Press compares to a Porsche

Focus: Big sound system/Bluetooth, "sharp appearance", luxury features. Press says "Retro sporty sound makes you feel young"

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. The eclipse gained ~150lbs from 1st to 2nd gen alone. Over 200lbs on some trims.

1st 2,745 lb
2nd 2,877 lb
3rd 3,053 lb
4th 3,472 lb

Hey, the GTR has a speaker like that too

If there’s anything to go by, I would believe with what A70TTR has to say about the 86. He was pretty bang on with development on the Supra since he kept in touch with the engineers.

And the GTR weighs 3900lbs.

It’s pretty much the antithesis of the 86. It’s fast as shit, and it sacrifices everything in the name of speed; including driver involvement, feel, and light weight.

Why let the driver drive when the car can do it better? If all you care about is outright speed, the answer is obvious.
