I'm surprised we've gotten 7 years out of it so far. This -is- a partnership deal, how long do you think Subaru will supply Toyota parts for their line up? There's no use keeping it around longer if they're not changing anything. They know it's time to devote 100% to their next project.
Not that any of this is factual, all here-say |

The 86 on Toyota's Chopping Block ?
If they have no changes planned, just let it die I guess. And I think the 86 is a great gateway drug into the sports car world.
Edit: I’m just mad, don’t mind me lol. I want a second gen with a larger engine but otherwise I’m just gonna be mad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'll be sad if the 86 was axed, but then maybe the value will hold up / increase over time?

I hope it gets chopped. This is one the best cars I've ever owned and plan on making it a weekend vehicle at some point. Not having a "better version" available will help me sleep at night! no, 2020 supra doesnt count...

Toyota wants to simplify their lineup. Subaru is bleeding money at a painful rate. Doesn't look good for the continuation of the FT86, and really doesn't look good for a second generation.
But the fact is - no one knows. If Toyota is stubborn, they can tell Subaru to keep cranking them out. And remember, at this point, the car is developed and pretty much "finished." It's just pure profit now (even if it's a small profit). I think this probably means we won't get a second gen. Last edited by bkharmony; 11-09-2018 at 05:01 PM. |

Considering the Automotive News source and understanding that Lentz is first and foremost a finance guy, the speculation may hold up.
It's also been said by other Toyota execs that going forward, cars and crossovers will be built on TNGA platforms. That's a problem for Subaru that most likely wouldn't be allowed to retool for TNGA and isn't profitable enough to consider it anyway. https://pressroom.toyota.com/tnga/ Besides, the TNGA C segment platform may not be able to accommodate a boxer engine and hybrid power unit. Toyota said that most of their cars will have HSD power units within a few years. If the speculation is accurate, there could be massive incentives by the middle of next year to clear out the remaining '19 MY 86's. More speculation, but there could be some deals available on the TRD's especially, there are more of them within 200 miles of me than any other 86 model according to CarGurus. |
