Was the battery ever allowed to fully discharge or is there any other reason for the battery not to perform as new?

Nope. I pulled the battery when I stored the car for winter and kept it on a battery maintainer.
Battery works flawlessly. Drove the car for the last time yesterday and she fired right up!
