Cockpit Space
I was actually really surprised how spacious the interior is in this car. My 03 Celica feels cramped in comparison, yet is a larger vehicle.
Thoughts? (Maybe this is just an illusion?) I saw someone on here say the 86 feels much safer than say the Celica. |

Dunno about interior room. Been a long time since I've sat in a Celica. Yes, the 86 is a far, far safer car. In the past 10 years, there have been massive improvements in crash structure.

Learned stick in an MR2 Spyder, probably the next closest thing. And yes, for just a few inches bigger than a Miata in every dimension it's actually pretty big inside. The Miata and the MR2 were about the same inside, but I just fit 4 people in my FR-S yesterday for roughly 10min and it actually wasn't that bad. The kid sitting behind me had his feet fall asleep though ( I'm 6"4 ). Probably just a better thought out interior. Virtually, the FR-S should feel smaller since it has a smaller wheelbase and is RWD. But I am willing to bet there was more thinking going into this car aswell.

I'm 6'2" and have no trouble with the space on the driver's side. (Haven't sat on the passenger side yet, lol.) The seats adjust quite nicely. By lowering the seat most of the way I had plenty of head room. By moving the seat most of the way back, I have plenty of leg room. I've sat in other small sports cars and found that they were too small for me.

Part of the reason the Celica seems smaller inside is the center console slopes towards the driver, whereas the 86 has an almost flat vertical console. Also, the actual dash itself is much smaller giving much needed room.

The interior space in the car is great considering how small it is.
However, I'm 6'5 and I wish the driver's seat had 1 more click back... My right leg/knee hits a spot there that makes driving a bit uncomfortable after about 45 minutes due to the way I have to bend my leg. |
