You do have an option though.

Well, in that case, it's a good thing you didn't join up (or get drafted into) the Army, because you wouldn't have made it through the first day of basic training.

I don't think I'd have made it TO basic training, let alone through it. During the Vietnam War, I wouldn't have paid for fake bone spurs. I'd have flown the coup.

WWII? Well, sometimes duty outweighs bullshit.

You are judging your actions based on historical knowledge. If drafted during WW2 you would not necessarily have the same outlook. When the US entered WW2 they were ill prepared and a skeleton force compared to what they grew to by the end. Much of that growth was through conscription since the country as a whole was against entering it and it was the only way to build fast enough. Don't kid yourself that every WW2 veteran went out feeling they were doing their duty.

Well, as a Vietnam era veteran and a Army infantry company commander, if you, with that attitude, would have happened to have been assigned to my command, the first thing I would have done would have been to arrange for a Section 8 discharge for you.

And that's OK, not everyone is suited to serve in the military.

Oh yes, today is 9/11.

That $1.00 went to the Fiberals. You may not believe me but I swear its Trudeau!

I would have gone full Alice's Restaurant. That said, I support the military in general. It's just not a place for me. Like being a police officer. Oh no.

Not going to lie. A major motivator for enlisting was my grandfathers stories of comraderie during ww2 and the folks he met, misery and fear draws fellows close something that cant be matched even now a days. i wanted a taste of that and I can say after 10 years I have a handful of guys ( and girl) that id drop everything for if they asked for help. hell one of them Im planning on making a homestead with later on in life.

another motivator was 9/11

Im still upset I havent directly had contact with them yet. Called a few strike missions against possible outposts and the jets came back with wings clean but it doesnt make me feel any less bitter about it all.

If I went anything close to officer now a days it would be CWO or going in as an LDO. easiest program to roll into. But I figger my time with the forces is numbered. I dont want to become what I dislike the most. Ill take the lessons from the good un's and remember the traits of the bad un's and move on.

'sides, i want my family more than anything right now. The forces did what it was supposed to do. Give me time to mature and get my feet centered and teach me skills. And in return I will have given them 11 years of honest work. (mostly hahaha) Sometimes the paperwork gets filled out after the work is completed
