Get a set of air jack.

Problem solved.

I will take the crappiest side mounted scissor jack ever made over the old bumper jacks. Had more than one hood or trunk lid creamed when the top decided to go east and the bottom west. Most unstable thing created by mankind.

I thought the exact same thing earlier. The scissor jack that comes with the 86 is no worse than the scissor jacks that have come with my last few cars, and never have I had one that scared me as much as the old bumper jacks. They take up a whole lot less space in the trunk, too.

The scissor jack in the 86 is the same one that came with my grey import RHD 1997 Supra.

I actually like this thing lol. Works well for jacking the car up enough to get my actual jack under the front end. Need me one of those fancy low profile jacks.

My GTI came with that same VW jack except in black. Honestly I trust it even less than I do the Toyota jack, but neither has failed in the handful of times I've used them.

I doubt either will fair well if there's any lateral load placed on them, so probably a good idea to use wheel chocks.

It only works properly when it's being tested. It seizes up during normal use.

I have never seen a car rock as much on a jack as I have with that.
Yeah, I had a MK6 GTI. I bought an air compressor specifically to avoid using that thing.

Put me in the category that doesn't mind it either. I use it fairly frequently for quick wheel jobs.

I'd had almost forgot about that man maim-er ......

Yep, either the base would sink into the ground ..... and the car would slide off

or, the jack would lose its grip on the bumper ..... and the car would slide off

or, the latching mechanism wouldn't hold ..... and the car would slide off

or, when releasing, the catch, the catch mechanism would go haywire and flip the jack handle up in your face ...... and the car would slide off

or, you would get the car jacked up, and while pulling to remove the flat tire, the car would slide off

Now, you have a 4,000 pound car, sitting on the ground, with no wheel and a bumper 1" off the ground and a bumper jack that has a twisted off base.

OBTW, it was snowing and it was uphill both ways .......

THE END

I got to use my jack today. What a piece of crap! I guess it's better than no jack at all but not by much.
I've had to use my FR-S jack to change a tire, and I'll have to say it is vastly easier to use than the jack with my Xterra or my wife's Civic, which are similar designs, but have absolutely terrible handles.

Gotta agree with the others here - that VW jack is a terrible design. Do they still ship those deathtraps with new cars? I guess I shouldn't be surprised if they do, given the low regard VW obviously has for their customers.

I've seen some similar terrible jacks with Volvos as well.

I don't know how it made it this far without some big poop pictures considering the title of this thread.
