manual transmission issues.
Hey everyone.
All you manual guys, when you are stationary with car running are you able to put the clutch in and select every gear with ease not grinding or effort? I've noticed for ages now (since I've had the car) that when I do this 4th and 6th always hard to select. I've also started to notice if I go for a 20 min drive stop the car turn it off leave for 5-10 mins and drive the car again I have no issue. Although If I just drive the car for hours the issue still occurs. Can this be explained at all?

I find that mine goes into 4th almost intuitively. Going from 5th to 6th does take a bit more effort to not let it slide into 4th. I don't notice the on/off difference you're describing.

Mines a tad finicky going into 1st if I'm not almost completely stopped. Doesn't really bother me though. All other gears are smooth as butter.
I've had many MT cars over the years... Sometimes a gear can be a little harder to grab than others. |

1st through 3rd have more syncros than 4th through 6th, the issue is because the gear isn't perfectly lined up when you're trying to select it and without the syncros spinning they aren't very effective at lining up the gears.
If you put it in neutral, let out the clutch, give it a rev, push the clutch in and try to select a gear it should go in much easier.

It's a bit hard to visualize, I know...but it's the same reason you can't shift a motorcycle's dogbox more than once while not moving without rocking it back and forth, and the same reason a bicycle's derailleur won't change cog without motion I'm over symplifying it but the fact is, changing gears is done best when things are moving.

Clutch has to be out in neutral to get the intermediate shaft spinning when you're at rest.
If you're driving (not stopped), then unless you shift REALLY slow the intermediate shaft will still be spinning, and unless you stop the output shaft will be spinning. My whole post was directed at the original question which involves the car being stopped while doing this. The issue while stopped is that one (or more) of the shafts need to be spinning for the syncros to work and line up the gears.

I don't see the first and second gear as an issue... All manuals that I've driven are stiffer when cold.
What does bother me is that going from 4th down to third is smooth while going from second up to third is not. ( second to third feels like wrx tranny) the rest feel Toyota /vw/BMW

Guess what!!!
So I had it at the dealer yesterday and today. to get the popping sound fixed; I got them to look at the tranny issue. They changed the oil; AND!! I can be stopped and go through all gears without an issue!!!!!!!!!!
