To make things way easier you'll need these: SUV jack stands. These are just taller jack stands so you can move around underneath with ease. High lift jack or thick wood blocks to give you that 3-4" you need. Tranny jack. Makes things easier if you can't bench press 100lbs. Cheater bar or beaker bar. Some bolts need some "tough love" PB blaster or any liquid bolt loosener spray. Extra long box end wrenches. Just so you can remove the drive shaft from the diff. Those bolts where the only bolts that give me problems. A buddy or two. Beer and food. I did it in my garage with a bad back. Took me about 3 days only because I only worked on it 3-4 hours at a time. No air tools just old fashioned hand tools. As much as you think of leaving the tranny fluid in there, just drain it. You'll make a mess when you try to remove it. It's pretty easy, given you know your way around an oil change.

Lots of help here:
https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138152 Also note: best to also replace 'bearing retainer' aka quill, snout as well as replacing throwout bearing with revised one, as well as the new type grease supplied. Additionally have clutch release fork and fork support checked for wear issues. See pics of newer throwout bearing here: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129260 I believe newer style grease is supplied/packaged with new style throw out bearing. >>>We have a new order here to shelter in place beginning midnight...allows going for food, outdoor exercise, Doctor visits, etc. Does not allow me to go buy a new car...<<< Last edited by ToySub1946; 03-19-2020 at 10:07 PM. |

My TOB went out about 13K miles ago at 97K. I read through the DIY and said, "Huh, that's not bad, I can do that."
Then I promptly got on the phone to get quotes for other people to do it instead and took it to a shop down the street. As for your original question, it's not normal for it to go out that soon, but we also don't know how you drive. Clutch wear is dependent in large part on your technique and how many bad habits you have. |

OP - Have you had the recall work done yet? They can replace the TOB in 5 minutes while the motor is out. If the clutch isn't shot and that's all you need that would be the way to get it done.
