I'm a little late to this thread, but I used to own a 135i and currently own an E92 M3. I ended up buying an FR-S too because I wanted a lightweight sportscar that was cheap and good on fuel (the M3 V8 is a bit rough on gas).
If you don't need a lot of power, the FRS/BRZ is a fun car to drive, but you'll get smoked by a lot of cars in a straight line, pretty much any family sedan with a V6 will dust you. The interior quality is fairly poor and the rear seats are worthless, but this is not something I find important in this class of car. Also the brakes are a bit lacking in bite compared to other cars in my experience. If I could only have one car I would take a 335i over the FRS because it's a better car in every way than the FRS except for driving at the limit. The FRS has lower limits and they're fun to exploit. The thing you have to look at is the cost of ownership for your 335i (it will be much higher for fuel and maintenance) vs the amount of fun you'll have in each car. Either way, both are great cars, just very different! Edit: For the record I've worked for a BMW dealer for quite a while, had 4 BMW's and a miata that I've tracked and modified. I personally will try to never drive a car over 100k miles again. On Miles alone id say get rid of BMW and get something else.

From a financial standpoint, If you can get decent value selling/trading your 335i, I think it would be a pretty good decision. Luxury cars over 100k miles are usually bad news (harder to sell and warranty ends.)
Let's say you get 20k for your BMW, and in return you use that as a down payment for your FR-S. (In Canada they're about 31k after tax) That leaves you with about 11k left to finance. You could drive the FR-S for a couple of years and probably sell it for at least 20k, and it seems like a decent ROI (although cars are the worst kinds of investments.) From a driving standpoint, there's really no comparison to the refinement you get with a modern BMW. I remember sitting in my friends' bimmer, we were cruising at 140-160km and it felt like we were traveling under 100kms. If you're looking for something more unforgiving and raw, I'm sure the FR-S will be able to deliver. One of the reasons I will probably never sell my AP1 is the rawness the car personifies. That personality is rare in modern cars and the AP1 was as spartan as it got (as least in the last decade.)

In your opinion, are they envious of your car, or are they enthusiasts and they, unlike most drivers, have an idea of what they are looking at?

I drive cars hard. Incredibly hard. I pretend I'm Mr. Schumacher everywhere. BMW's take what you throw at them, and beg for more. You just can't break them. Scion on the other hand, is a Toyota. To their credit, my first car was a bombproof '93 Tercel. So my impression of Toyota's reliability is also good. Fuel economy is about the same. So disregard that. Plus they both run on Premium. The 335 has SO MUCH more acceleration at any speed. There's just no comparison, we're talking 310lb/ft of torque from idle vs. 150lb/ft at high revs, so if acceleration is what you're after, stick to Bavaria. What it came down to for me is handling. I thought my bimmer loved corners. And it does... compared to any other sedan on the road. After test driving the FR-S though, and returning to the cockpit of the 335i, my BMW now feels heavy in corners, with lots of body roll. (I have the sport package on my BMW.) Cheers

I'd have to agree with most statements. I personally had a 08 335i before my i traded it for the F30. I also had a JB4 in that 08 and Effin loved it! After my accident with my new 2012 335i i settled for the FR-S and honestly, I'm having tons of fun with the little power it has. But will be picking up an M3 in a few months to satisfy my craving for power.
I'd hate to have to choose, but i think 90k miles really would make me consider getting a new car. I say M3!
