Must be a regional markup around here (I believe both thill and I are in Northern California) because I see the exact same thing as him, any S2k priced under $15k will need a few weekends inspecting stuff and I expect several thousand dollars to give me confidence in being able to drive it at 10/10ths. I wouldn't budget any less than $18k on one I intend to drive immediately (but that wouldn't preclude me from picking up a $12k blue light special) and at least $20k to get it to the track, stuff adds up quick.

New soft top is at least $1k, $2.5k if done at dealership, set of tires is easily $500+ along with another ~$400 for brake pads and I hear they eat rotors at the track (I also heard a story recently about a guy who's caliper seals failed, lost brakes at the track, gotta be ready to rebuild those), idk how much a full fluid flush will cost (motor oil, coolant, tranny, diff, brake fluid) but that's another couple hundred bucks easy, a high mileage 15 year old car's seats will be pretty worn in, there's another couple hundred, bushings all around will need inspection, dampers could be blown, aforementioned wheel bearings will be worth keeping an eye on and that's just off the top of my head for a guy who hasn't lurked an S2k forum in years.

And buying a shiny 2009 with less than 30k miles for $25k isn't going to save you from some of those costs either imo.

Oh and I forgot motor inspection, compression test, inspection and measurement of the valvetrain, maybe pulling the pan if you're keen to see if there's sludge buildup on a high mileage Honda, etc.

Yeah I am in Minnesota and it definitely makes it more challenging as there are fewer cars to pick from and you have to worry about rust if people drove the cars year round. I have been looking in a pretty big radius, but within reason. I guess I could try to buy in another state and either ship it or drive it back but that is just a huge hassle and can get frustrating and expensive to fly out to buy a car you think is clean only to find out it is not after doing a proper inspection. I have had S2K owners intentionally lie to me saying the car had never been modified/damaged in any way only to find out that was not true at all. And these were one owner cars.

Used car market is a shady place for sure.

Went to Mazda with the GF yesterday. She's bored with her car and wants something "fun" and I know she wants a new Mazda3 or upcoming CX3 so I dragged her over to the Mazda and Ford dealers.

The ND was a "Launch Edition" which a price of tag of $37K which immediately made me do this. I asked the sales person the reason for it and he said the launch-edition models are already pre-sold but the reason they have one sitting in the showroom was that a buyer backed out and I said, "I'm not surprised, who in their right mind would spend $37k on a Miata!" His body language suggested he took that personally.

Anywho, the inside/interior was the quality Mazda quality we becoming accustomed to seeing. However the lack of telescoping steering wheel was surprising and the 18" gap between the tire and fenders. I'm exaggerating to make a point but goddamn the car looked like it was prepped for a rally course.

Does the wheel atleast adjust in terms of height?
I'd love to see what the chassis can do with a supercharger and sticky tires. Kind of like the super20

Yes, it has tilt-adjust. My NB's steering wheel is fixed, and I've always thought it to be perfect, but I can see why a taller person might want to tilt it out of the way of their knees.

The ND's seat rails are a bit sloped toward the rear, so that the seat goes higher as you adjust it forward. Works perfectly for me, I'm at just the right height for resting my arm on the door when I can comfortably push the clutch to the floor.

The launch edition Miatas are in customers' hands now. Mazda's website is still showing the configurator for the 2015 MY, though.
