I arranged to have mrs humfrz pre-emptively banned from the forum - so, I think I'm safe. The hot water heater installer dude is scheduled to arrive between noon and 2 PM TODAY! Yaaaa …. Pain management? Under the circumstances, my back pain, has been put on hold, till we get some hot water (nobody around here wants to hear about it - ). Story time - why I don't hook up the hot water heater myself?? Back in Missouri, I had a gas hot water in the basement, that went out. So, I took my 3/4 ton PU truck and picked up a new one. I was ready to install that puppy, so I decided to call my oldest son down to the basement to show him how to "sweat" copper pipes together to hook up the water supply. So, after shutting off the water and draining the lines, I grabbed my soldier and fired up my torch. Yep, I showed him how to clean the copper pipes and fittings first. Well, after several attempts, I COULD NOT get the copper pipe and fittings not to leak after several attempts to "sweat" them together. My son was NOT impressed, so I sent him upstairs. Then I called a plumber. The plumber arrived the next day and started the minor job. He asked for a piece of bread. I thought he was hungry, so I went upstairs and made him a sandwich. He thanked me, then took the top slice of bread off, wadded it up and stuffed it up into the copper pipe that led down from the ceiling. THAT stopped the constant dripping of water, that was preventing the copper fitting from to sweating to the copper pipe without leaking. (the bread just washes out after the water is running) THE END humfrz |

Only Iron, or metal with iron in it like steel, can "rust". Which happens in a combination of water and air. Aluminum is subject to oxidation. Aluminum oxide forms on the surface from exposure to air. The oxide is harder than aluminum. And, protects the aluminum form further deterioration. Aluminum has a hardness of 2-2.9. Aluminum oxide is 9 in hardness; the same hardness as sapphire. Aluminum will deteriorate in chlorine. Or in environments that have extreme PH. Rust does not protect iron. In this way Iron Oxide and Aluminum oxide are fundamentally different.

I bought a 2TB HP NVME drive. Once in, my lappy will hold 4TB total. Not perhaps as much as I'd like, but passable.

Finally have a new furnace... which is good, because tomorrow is supposed to be low single digits into the negatives (F) overnight. Already seems to be working better than the old one since our Nest says 2hrs for the remaining 2 degrees, but it's already up 10 in under an hour...
Down side is, because the engineer was inattentive and presumptive, we thought the a/c condenser was 15 and reasonably due for replacement. Turns out, it was the 10 year old condenser... but the new one should be a lot more efficient, and too late now, so... in it goes. Tomorrow. That's right, they'll be installing our air conditioning when it is no warmer than 4 degrees out there. At least mostly out of the wind, I hope!

We went back to doing a major portion of our heating with wood again this year, and it's really true... wood heat keeps you warmer. You're warm while you split it, you're warm while you haul it, you're warm while you stack it, you're warm while you haul it inside for burning, you're warm bent over trying to coax the morning fire back into life....
