All 2nd gens have the same brakes.

So the only downside to a Premium would be I don't have the option for 16's but the Base does? I haven't seen anyone using 16's anyway, so probably not an issue.

In the context of autocross, there likely will never be a 16 inch tire that you'll want to use.

I have a 2020 limited PP model with the 17x7.5 wheels and 48 offset. So for DS I have to stay with the 17x7.5 or 18x7.5 and the lowest offset I can go to is 41. Any suggestions on wheels that meet that criteria under $350 per?

RPF1 is probably the lightest you'll find and fit that budget. 17x7.5 +48 and can run a 7MM spacer on them.

I have Sparco's in that size that are 18#. Was hoping to find something in a 41 or 42 offset so I didn't have to run spacer.

I like the Konig Hypergrams a lot. I have the FAST Hayaku currently, a lightweight cheap wheel, and really like the bang for buck from the Hypergrams so that will likely be the route I go. RPF1 are also a great bang for buck but a bit more money.

I am currently running 17x7.5 with 225/45/17 rubber, the 10mm wider does not affect my classing where I am located. You do not want 18" wheels for AutoX, stick to 17".

Went to the first autocross event this season. It was a lot of fun and a big learning experience. Last season was the first time I tried it and had so much fun. I went couple of times in my previous car Infiniti M37x - it was fun but very heavy and understeery. I also tried my brothers Mk5 VW Golf on lowering springs and summer tires, that felt like a much better handling car.

But going to a small RWD car was a bit of a different experience. First run was a blur, I don't even remember anything. I was just trying to stay on course and keep the car from doing a 180. Probably because the Premacies don't have much grip even the stock engine has more than enough power to oversteer the car if your not careful with the throttle application. After I got back I took a deep breath, ran through the course in my mind again and after that my runs were more thoughtful you could say. I was trying to fix the mistakes the instructor was telling me about.

Because of the large amount of participants that day we only had 4 runs each, first 4 runs I had 47.9-47.6. And the last run I really focused on proper lines and managed to improve my time by more then a second to 46.5. Which got me to 3rd place in PAX in novice class out of 20. Pretty happy about that.

The problem is he has the Brembos, so no RPF1 in 7.5" is going to fit to my knowledge. The spokes are not curved enough to clear the brakes. If it just had the normal brakes, no problem and RPF1's are a good, light option.

Write up time after this weekend's doubleheader.

Saturday, I ended up with my second highest PAX score in years, so I was pretty stoked. Unfortunately I don't have my best on video. Here's my second best:

Sunday was another story. It rained in the morning and everyone's morning runs were wet. I was sitting 17th out of 100+ and super pumped as that's very good in our region.

Afternoon runs were dry for everyone and I only improved 0.4 over my wet run. My 5th run I had so much speed I had to bail off course and my 6th I punted a cone hard.

Here was my best, with my co-driver beating me by 0.6 seconds:

What do you think the actual odds are the first gen twins go to ES in the next ~2 years? Seems nuts they're still there with the gen 2 and CTR.

If not, I've heavily thought about going to STX with SSC not being an option for 2017+. It seems these cars really come alive when you can get some front camber in them in either class.

I did some quick math and you basically need to improve your times 1.22% in raw to meet the same PAX position. For a prior event I did, I had a 36.343 and I'd only need a 35.899 to get the exact same score. The 245's with much wider whees, coilovers, and header + tune I think would easily offset those.

We had an STX driver getting a 34.036 on the same course. We had SSC drivers in the mid 35's easily and good drivers in the 34's. So to get a mid-35 or even high 34's's seems completely do-able with a fixed torque dip, 245's, Yoks, and coilovers.

Thoughts? DS is just nuts for this car. The gen 2's are a full second quicker on a ~30 second course.

Write a letter, I agree the first gen twin is buried in DS. Sucks the 2017+ isn't in SSC but that would defeat the purpose of a spec class. STX is the no brainer, IMO.

Assuming STAC doesn't fuck over STX with the new twins...

I would never want to own an 86 with less then 2 degrees of camber.

I hope ES and Stx are too well subscribed to be fucked with, I think ES2.0 happens when NC/86 are cheaper and easier to find then NB/MR2, that’sa ‘25 at the earliest proposition I think. Stx when the participation levels drop, it’s easier to build an stx car from scratch then an STS car so I think it should be solid for at least another year or two.

Stx parts will be transferable to the new car if I’m wrong, whether you upgrade or sell. Or they could be used for a SP/SM build. Get 40-45 offset wheels and your good.

Easiest letter I think would be to get the facelift cars into SSC, the hp is nothing combined with the extra pounds and the gearing is a wash on national courses, what’s gained in the digs will be lost in the straights. No data on that, just my gut. Hell it’s a snowflake class, mandate a gear change, it’s a 4 hour job max.

And for shits and giggles, here's a 2022 GR86 vs my 2017 BRZ. Time difference was ~1.2 seconds. Different drivers. Joe probably has ~20 years experience and is up there too, but Alex is Alex.

Even by the first cone, Alex has a decent lead, so yeah, torque is a thing.
